what is the absolute thinnest clear top sheet that is available?
Is there any paper like product that would act like a very thin top sheet but also be able to have extra layers for a thicker top sheet in certain areas?

I got so tired off lugging my heavy jigs from one side of my planer to the other that I tried a new simpler approach. I saw single board jigs being used in a ski factory or ski building video somewhere and was inspired to reverse engineer them. I bought a standard 8' 1"x10" pine board with...

i use veneer with no top sheet and have had the same experience as kit. The veneer usually gets impregnated with resin and is super tough. Sometimes there is extra thick resin on top of the veneer that I sand or scrape off. Sometimes there will be dry spots on the top of the resin that look a lot li...

after they get it right do they set the final profile and camber with IR or some other way?
or is the timing such that there is a window of time with a slight amount of play that after they get it right they just let it cure in that position?
It seems like a great method for quality control.

reverse camber

I made a pair of reverse camber skis a few years ago that I still use. 145/122/130 about 30m radius full reverse camber They are my ski#3 on http://skibuilders.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4616&highlight= The radius of the rocker is right about the same as the side cut radius. On hard pack and ice...

I subtract the thickness of the veneer (plus a little more) from my core. I still tend to get skis that are too stiff (this is more due to my own neurotic tendencies during layup). I have made skis completely from skateboard veneer and at the ends they had two 1/16 layers of maple and one layer of 1...

I have added triaxial glass, woven triaxial fiberglas and 1/16" maple skateboard veneer under foot. I also use aluminum window screen in the underfoot area, sometimes this is just under the bindings other times i use this for the entire underfoot area. When I use fiberglass I taper it to a poin...

pavelbozak,
great looking cores!!
I made a very similar pair last year and the similarity of the side cut to the reverse camber will allow the stiff ski to turn easily.
12mm might be a little thick for that wide of a ski.
For sure you'll be able to go really fast!!

I've used the hardwood insert under the binding method and ended up with really stiff skis. On all my skis I use aluminum window screen under the top layer of fiberglass. This has held up great. Sometimes I use just enough under the binding pieces and other times I use the screen material on a longe...

hamerhead-what accounts for your reduction in core weight? was it a thinner core or was it from the carbon displacing the heavier wood?

PTTR, The reason I have used tapered rockers is that if the ski is tilted and the side cut falls within a certain range the edge will engage and the ski will feel hooky. A tapered rocker will keep the rocker's edge from engaging even as the ski is tilted at a high angle. When not tilted then the roc...

I have been delving into ski designs with rocker, taper and camber/reverse camber. I usually adhere to the 55%/BCL/45% when mounting bindings. My tapers are usually just a cessation of sidecut with a very subtle narrowing that ends in a rounder tip. I just eyeballed the sidecuts so I am not sure wha...

Egil, i like your idea. I am wondering if using only carbon and resin with a flax core will lead to a less lively ski? I could see reversing the normal method of construction with a composite core and veneer top and bottom layers. You would end up with a super thin ski. Maybe the thickness/type of t...

I''ve used 1/42" maple and Japanese ash veneers for topsheets and tip fill. The ash was brittle but the even pressure of the press kept it from breaking.
