Sidewall radius is key

I made these skis as a cap design in a vacuum press: http://picasaweb.google.com/danishstock/SkiBuildPowderCarvers?feat=directlink The cores and bases are identical width so the edges sit out proud providing a platform for the sandwiched glass and the top layer of glass to seal. All that glass and e...

Do those pythons that are overrunning Florida have scales? I think they are growing them long and fat enough to make scary cool climbing skins. Though I could see trouble with holding them still while applying Gold Label! ;)

Voodoo, I've chronicled the building process at the links listed above each ski. Check them out and then ask more specific questions. No steam box. Powder Carvers have black Durasurf 4000 bases. The BC Lights' bases are ipe, a hard wood commonly used for outdoor decks. Turns out the ipe holds glide ...

CTrider, I have made cores by all three methods: router and bridge; planer and bed; and the old school hand plane. Both power tool methods scared the crap out of me and ruined at least one core each. The router method is prone to having wood chips work their way under the core lifting it off the bas...

G-man, Thanks. I really wanted a topside that would let the wood show through. The 22 oz glass on my friend's skis topside showed quite a bit of fibers. I can only guess that so many strands are just harder to completely wet out. your sidecut is pretty radical though ;) they say that a tight radius ...

A first pair...

After a year of research and contemplation, and a few months of building equipment, etc., my friend and I each have a new pair of skis. This thread is about the pair for me. I will post about Kevin's skis at a later time. I wanted a wide, light, turny ski that would float in the fluff but also would...

No experience here, but a quick series of samples varying the pigment and CaCO3 amounts would provide some info.

gladegp, You can probably salvage the skis. Try drilling out the ripped out spots with a forstner bit (the flat bottom type) and filling the holes with epoxy. The epoxy "plugs could then be drilled and tapped for standard screws. You would not be able to simply drill a pilot hole and drive scre...
