hey g-man, what kind of mill do you have? I have a sperber mill, a high tech version of an alaskan style. It has two stihl .090 chainsaw engines on opposite ends of the cutting bar that pull together on .404 chain. Ever see one? I used to share a log dump with a few others. One guy had a woodmizer w...

this site has a very good section on "how to" including how much epoxy you need and how important mixing it in a few batches for one layup is so the exothermic reaction of the large mass doesn't make the whole volume "kick" too quickly. This technique gives you time to get the wh...

ash will hold a standard ski screw no problem. you should carefully mark your bindings with your boots attached to them to get your boot placement over the center of the ski side to side and length wise over your contact length. Then outline the binding position on tape or better yet is to position ...

endre, If you have a dynamic skiing technique you might like a stiffer ski so you can take advantage of the way the ski releases when you change edges. If you ski with a smoother type of style you might not need the "pop" a stiffer ski imparts. you might want a ski that is softer. I believ...

hey endre, my point was that "pop" is usually associated with stiffer skis since you need a stiffer platform to transmit the energy into the hill rapidly to achieve a dynamic turn. Although stiffer skis have more pop and inherently less dampening, you are hard pressed to get both maximized...

endre, Howe has added an aluminum torsion box mounted on rubber to add dampening. He has added an additional system to control what most skis designs have to compromise stiffness to control... dampening. In general, negating any "additional system" added to control dampening of forces, sti...

Dampening of force is what a soft ski does by being flexible. As your tip encounters a bump a soft ski will take longer to transmit the energy to the skier because the ski flexes. Stiff skis don't flex much so they instantly transmit the force to the skier. This works in reverse too. When you initia...

Of course any asymetry in any glue up will cause some non rectangular alignment. I would assume that the first tuning of the ski would take out any minor irregularitys. In any lamination the thing to avoid is voids in the glue up. They will cause a weak spot in the ski and a concentration point for ...

what to build?

I wonder if any of you builders have gotten a formula for a tailoring a ski for a certain person or conditions. In all my years of skiing, I haven't skied that many different skis. I imagine that the ski that is most versitile is also the one that is the most mediochre. I am interested in what you b...

its the hemlock that has no stiffness or ability to hold a screw. I come from the northeast usa originally, where the best "hardwoods" from. (yes, I know the northwest has nice softwood lumber species) hemlock is considered useless back east, it not good for woodwork, doesn't burn worth a ...

hi to everyone, I am new here so I will tread as lightly as possible to begin with. I have been milling my own lumber for many years and sometimes lumber has tension in it. Also after machining lumber it may release tension slowly. I have seen a straight board that when ripped in half now becomes tw...
