I kind of avoid Niseko because it has become such a shit show. Overcrowded even in the backcountry. But there are some places you can get away from it. I now live in Sapporo. I would suggest that thinking about towns is not how you will locate the best backcountry skiing in Hokkaido. The best venues for the most part are not in towns. You will do better to target the ryokan (hot spring inns) that are at the ends of roads and at the foot of the good...

Holy crap this is scary! When I think about what can go wrong in ski building it's usually around big pieces of metal ripping apart and flying round the shop.
