The sintering process in itself is what creates pores in the base material. Powdered uhmwpe is put in a form similar to that of a cheese (not wedge, but whole cheese), the entire thing is then heated to a point below the melting point of the material but still hot enough to make the individual parti...

Sintered UHMWPE has lots of pores, extruded may have some, but a lot less. The pores act as storage for the wax, given that the base has been waxed properly. Test have been performed showing wax layer on the surface of skis intact after 30km (cross country). Kuzmins article was widely discussed on r...

Sounds good. How many accelerometers do you think are necessary to get a meaningful result? Ideally, both skis should be instrumented at the same time, making comparisons of inside and outside ski possible, it might even be desirable to instrument both edges of both skis, as this might give some clu...

Cool.

Guess we´ll bee seeing each other at Oppdal then.

We should keep each other posted on developments of the measuring equipement. Might be some good possibilities for technology transfer and cooperation on different stages of design.

We could probably meet up at Oppdal some time this winter. Good to get some pressure on, so that the testing apparatus is actually built... I´m hoping to get a cabin up there for the season, might make a good base for experimenting! btw Endre: Is your diploma available for download somewhere? Would ...

Guess the lights went out late at NTNU yesterday! They are a bit fragile, but if we protect them with some hard ass tape and ski carefully i'm shure it would work! they are about 10cm long and cost 200kr each, expensive to damage lots of them. So: Does anybody know where we could get/borrow some hea...

Blissard: What is your take on instrumenting the skis? What ind of sensors would be most effective? (I can´t help thinking that a few precise accelerometers (tip, middle, tail (boot)) might give you a lot of really useful data?) Pressure sensors under the boots will probably be quite hard to fit, an...

Haha, I have not been in your mind Endre, I have only been discussing ski characteristics with a friend, and we are in the early stages of trying do build our own skis. (Deciding on when to start doing the ski press seems to be pretty hard.) Our original reason for testing the flex characteristics o...

The ideas I presented earlier have nothing to do with finding the "perfect" flex, but rather finding a close approximation to the real forces acting on the ski. The approximation is never going to be perfect, and it will anyway have to be adjusted for different types of snow and even diffe...

Boyning Thanks for the video, seeing it done like that makes it seem easy... ;) Still some questions about the flexpatterns and ways of testing it. (Hopefully my illustration is visible.) Testing and calculating the flex in the ways discussed above have the limitations of the third drawing in that ...

Thanks for posting your methods Endre, I was wondering how the measurements were done in the last issue of fri flyt... It seems you have developed a very precise technique and it yields data that is completely coherent and reprodusable. I have an idea for a testing apparatus that involves the same t...

Pop is, in my opinion, how much extra vertical force you can generate by ollieing (leaning quickly on your back tips, or front tips if you have a lot of guts) before takeoff. How much pop a ski has depends on the skiers weight and the stiffness of the ski. (Thinking along the lines of an adjustable ...
