Snowbird, UT 12/6/2010

Just another 2" day at the Bird skiing with my old roomate (he's the one filming). Caught a bunch of air, had many a pow turn, and didn't ride the tram once. This stuff is just way too much fun. Thank god for night shift.

Cool vid. Thanks for the link. Sort of some surprising methods they use. Maybe this is how they do more of their prototypes and big skis. I would have thought they stamped out their base material, not finish the sidewalls with a hand router, and not attach the edges with glue before hand. Whatever. ...

From what I've seen in the ski industry as a consumer, the last big lasting innovation was the shaped (parabolic) ski. It revolutionized skiing. Most other innovations fade after a couple years, until a new one comes a long that makes the old one seem ancient... There's a fine line between innovati...

Yikes!!! I got a pack of eight 6' x 4" wide bamboo boards at Bamboo Hardwoods in Seattle for ~$30 (of course there was no shipping). Each board makes a perfect ski core, so I'm at ~$4 per core. You'd still have to laminate a few together for something wide enough for a snowboard, but it's stil...

Different fiberglass weights

I just received a bunch of fiberglass from Raka and they sent me different stuff from last time. I didn't notice the difference until I was cutting it to size. The stitching is a bit different and it felt stiffer and heavier than the previous stuff. I weighed out some small sections and the old stuf...

For jig saw blades I use the Bosch T101BF 10TPI bit-metal bit from Home Depot. It's the one that says for "Hardwood". There's a very similar blade they sell called the T101B which is 10tpi as well, but it is garbage. It's cheaper, but not worth it. Even with the better blade, I will still ...

Check it out: http://www.codaboards.com/topsheets.php

They are $40 each including material. Shipping is priced a bit weird. It's $20 to ship 1 or about $21 to ship 4.

Coda Boards sublimated graphics

I realize most people are aware of Coda Boards sublimated topsheets, but I still wanted to start a dedicated thread to make it easier for people to search for them. Their service is awesome and deserves some added attention. So far I've placed 3 different orders with them and I received all of them ...

Well I thought I liked soft skis but...........my cores are quite a bit thicker. A few pair of skis last year were around 2-2.5 tip, 10.5-11 waist, 3-3.5mm tail, and everyone thought they were too soft--but me. I've always been a fan of a softer, more forgiving tip and tail, but stiff under foot. Th...

I'm going on swing shift next Monday. 3:00-11:30. Almost perfect hours if you have to work 8+ hours a day. I was the only engineer at our place to volunteer for this shift. I signed up for it through April. I did it last winter as well. I got about 115-125 days in. Almost all of them half days, but ...

I just got 2 boxes of bamboo flooring from Calibamboo.com. I haven't built a pair yet, but I've planed down 7 of the 8 pairs to final size. They are vertically laminated 6' long by 6" wide planks; 8 per box. Two boxes were $240 shipped. The bamboo seems very similar to some Terigren bamboo floo...

Looks like you way over cooked your skis to me. I did this on the first pair I pressed with heat. Mine didn't turn out that bad, but they had huge blisters on them. They were also smoking pretty good when I took them out of the press. I only have heat on the bottom and I had my TC located on the top...

I am not sure what you mean by "bent ski" rocker. I keep thinking of Surface skis but they are the only ones that I see like that. My tip mold has a constant 104 cm radius , my sidecut portion of the ski has a flat mold, and the tail mold radius is 147 cm. I think what you are seeing is t...

Awesome looking skis Dr. D! You will love that tip/tail rise. Looks a lot like mine. They usually have around 75mm of tip rise and 45mm in the tail. I like a constantly rising tip like yours compared to the "bent-ski" rocker that most companies have out there. I have a steel cattrack like ...
