I have thought about using foam in my cores too. I was going to router voids in select locations so not to interfere with bindings then inlay XPS trimmed to suit. The edge bender is probably gone now but if you still have it i am interested. If you don't have it do you have a photo so i can try to replicate it. I made a couple that work but it is still a pain to bend edges.
