if you use inserts you can also glue a few of the inserts onto the base material and use them as "pins" to line up the core. once the core is in place you can then nail it onto the mold so it definately won't move

Thanks for the responses. The graphics were just a piece of fabric we thought was cool and on top of the fabric we used 3.25 oz glass as a top sheet. mark, I guess its not really a shed. We just call it that since it was one of those pre-assembled buildings meant to be used as a storage shed. We ran...

First Pair of Skis

My brother and I finished our first pair about a month ago and I finally got around to putting up this post. Specs: -115-80-105 (without edge width included) -maple/poplar core with maple sidewalls (13mm thick in middle and 3+mm at tip and tail) -20oz triaxial fiberglass above and below core -fiberg...

I didn't even use tip spacers and the wood didn't relax significantly. Although I had prebent the tips somewhat using boiling water.

I'm no expert but it seemed to me that although my skis lost some camber, the tips did not relax noticibly. If they did, I don't think it really would have effected the ski anyway.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'm going to try to use a single piece of wood for the cores and see what happens. I'll be sure to report back. I feel that if the main purpose of the core is just to give space between the fiberglass layers, maybe the grain direction/strength won't have that mu...

Core made of single piece of wood

Hi, I was thinking about using only pine in the cores of my next skis since I want to see how changing core thickness but not it's wood type effects the ski's stiffness. Since I would only be using one type of wood, would laminating the core really be neccesary? Would I notice a major difference in ...

I live in Rhode Island and have built a pair and could help you if you needed it. But I'm only a senior in highschool so I wouldn't really be a "mentor".

I was under the impression that the peel ply sold by composite/epoxy stores put a texture on the surface so it could be bonded to other parts/layers later. If you just want to prevent the breather from sticking to the composite you can use a layer of simple painters plastic which can be bought at ho...

From the picture, it looks like you actually have polyester resin, not epoxy resin. I'm not really an expert on the differences, but I think that polyester resin doesn't flex as well as epoxy, doesn't bond to other materials as well, and isn't as durable in the long run. I guess you could try it, bu...

lasse, usually the arc on a ski is not a perfect circular arc, so most people just decide on a tip with a waist width and a tail with and connect them with the smoothest line possible.
