Lot's of good information here so I thought I would post my experience so far. I used a Cherry Veneer for this set of skis (Non-paper backed). We wet out the veneer during the layup to ensure a nice even coating of epoxy through the veneer (no blotchy, dry spots). The top of the cassette was waxed w...

Has anyone had any experiences with their mold release affecting their finish? I'm getting ready to varnish my top sheet's (cherry veneer) but the they have some of the wax we used as a mold release on the top. I am a little hesitant to use a chemical to remove the wax as I'm afraid it will negative...

Carbonized Bamboo vs Natural Bamboo
Has anyone used carbonized bamboo as a core material? My understanding is that is a little bit softer as a result of carbonizing process. (20- 30% from what I have read). I am a little leery of using the carbonized as my inclination would be to thicken the profile slightly to compensate for the soft...

I would leave the core thickness the same. IMO The bigger issue with Fir as a core material has to do with binding retention rather than overall strength of the core. Adding core thickness will not help binding retention. If you are going to use a fir core I would recommend using binding inserts as ...

Heat affecting camber
When using a heated press, how does the rate at which heat is ramped up affect the camber of a ski? Specifically when applied in a single side application. I have seen scattered information around the board about this topic, but thought I would try and consolidate some answers.

SHIF, I am very intrigued by the possibility of using macaranduba as a side wall. Have you had any trouble with warping or twisting in your experience with it? I have had the unfortunate experience of working with it on a deck. I had a lot of trouble with the wood warping and twisting after it was i...

That price does not seem unexpected from a hardware store. You will definitely pay a substantial premium for material like that at a hardware store. I would look into a local building material supplier or a miscellaneous metal shop. Another option is to use wood like shopvac did. I have no personal ...
