Re: Carbon ski troubles

I use carbon in sometimes asymmetrical layups and have not had issues if I cure the resin at about 60C or 140F for a :40 minute cure. There are a lot of factors though with your resin type. Oops, I see you have tried lower temperature cures already.

Grindrite st600 belt tension question

I have an old st600. I cannot figure out how you tension a belt once you put one on. Can anyone explain how this is done? Thank you!

Affordable drilling template for splitboard inserts

This 30 dollar jig from Woodhaven has 3/8" diameter holes, 1" apart that if used with a 3/8 forstner bit gets your splitboard binding inserts in the right place for an easy price. Also the threaded line up pins (on the thread side) are exactly 1 & 11/16 from the 1" hole centers fo...

Re: Top sheet replacement

weird. I'd carefully hand sand the top until the fleece is gone. Floating an epoxy layer over that fuzz will not come out well. however, if you have the time floating one layer of epoxy over the fuzz will give you a safe layer to sand smooth to prep for a second layer of epoxy. You don't want to san...

Re: Jonrezz’s Build Log

You are rubbing your aluminum layer with mold release (like car wax) before laminating so the epoxy will just flake off right? I started building before the internet and was amazed to later learn of mold release and baking paper for epoxy control.

Re: Jonrezz’s Build Log

thanks for posting. I have some veneers that resist perfectly flat laminations with vacuum bagging. I have a question: with the supersoft product are the veneers dry after being pressed? I was wondering if lamination strength would be compromised if the veneer was saturated with this softener. Do yo...

Re: First skis, choosing core wood

Poplar is pretty similar to aspen, maybe most poplar is slightly heavier, slightly tougher (resistance to compression and bending strength) Beech and ash are pretty similar also. Both are fairly heavy, tough and handle shock and compression well. There are easy wood data tables at https://www.wood-d...

Re: Ripped up my latest build

In the last picture it looks like the resin barely penetrated the paulownia and like it hardly touched the beech wood. It appears like the wood was oiled or something to prevent the epoxy from bonding. Was epoxy coated on the wood before laying the carbon fabric down? I would not use that epoxy again.

Re: epoxy cure time

If you have or get a heat gun, you can make a quick box perhaps out of a sheet of 1" panel insulation, a heat gun on about 240-260F will get the inside temp to about 130-140F in about 20 minutes, another 40 minutes at that temp will cure that brand of resin quite well. You can poke some oven th...
