wood sidewalls

Just found this thread. I haven't been to this site for a couple years but I still make skis with wood sidewals. I have been debating whether to go to synthetic sidewalls or sticking with wood. I'm going to stick with wood. I presently use hard maple but will use IPE or some other iornwood on my nex...

The two pair are the same construction. Core is aspen and fir. All wood core tip to tail. Sidewalls are maple with a 17degree bevel. Edges are continious with PTEX 4000 black base. Demensions are 174cm-137-107-125 with a about a 20m multi radius sidecut. I have a pair I ski on and they are a great a...

I use CA flexable glue and glue the entire edge to the base. This has worked very well for me. You should be able to but it in wood working supply stores or maybe a hobby supply store.

Just found this thread. I have this same problem. I have a pair of skis I pressed a few weeks back that came out with too much camber. The skis have about 9mm of camber in them right now and I would like to bring it down to ~4mm. Do I need to over flex them to achieve this?

Bamboo is a very pourous wood so you need to seal the pours before you paint. I would think you could apply your resist tape then laser, then seal the ingraving with laqure, then paint whatever color you want. The key is to get the wood sealed with something clear before you color. If you are going ...

Of my three pairs of skis the post cured pair are the only pair that have not delaminated. Altough the other two pair just have minor delamination in the tip it is still frustrating. I am using Resin Research epoxy and on their website they recomend a high temp post cure. BTW, I got my first topshee...

So, I have four or five days on the cambered skis. It took a while to get used to them but I like their performance better with each day. With the lousy snow conditions here in Colorado I really haven't had a chance to test them in off piest conditions though.

I use flexbale CA to glue edges to base. So far no problems. I lay up in my mold but don't prebend the tips. You can buy a small bottle of the glue at Rockler Woodworking stores for about $12 and glue six or seven pair of skis. I may try the prebend though because the tips do relax quite a bit espec...

The press does not go in the box. I remove the skis from the press after about six hours of room temp cure and then post cure in the box. Its a long cure process and I have only cured one pair this way so can't really say how it will work in the long run. The skis did come out well cured so time wil...

tip protection

Does anyone have a source for tip protectors like you see on many of the production model skis? Solamon uses a horseshoe shape, K2 uses a through button etc.

If you go with wood use a stable hardwood. Maple or oak, pine wood be too soft. I put my skis in a hot box after initial cure so I don't have the heat blanket issues. How do you like the rickity old saw horses the press is sitting on? :? My brother finally through them away after twenty years of ser...

I use a wood cat track and it works just fine for me. I tested deflection between aluminum and wood and the wood seemed stronger. Maybe a thicker walled aluminum wood be better but like you said, expensive. I used maple ripped to 3/4 x 3/4 strung on 3/16 cable with a 1/4" nut between each piece...
