Re: School me on bases: How much worse is extruded actually

The way I understood it from a Ptex manufacturer is that extruded base has about 40% amorphous content and 60% crystalline content. Sintered is the opposite 60% amorphous. And when warmed the amorphous freckles draw in wax a bit like sugar dissolving in warm water. And as it cools some squeezes back...

Re: Jonrezz’s Build Log

That sounds like a lot of smoke from your vac pump. You should include a needle valve so it doesn't pull so hard. This will help lengthen the pump life. Once you have it all pulled down the pump shouldn't be moving too much air so shouldn't be venting much at all. You should have a couple of setting...

Re: Connecting two pieces of P-Tex

If it was me I wouldn't bother with trying to glue the two pieces together. I would just lay them together and run tape along the bottom side to hold together until out of the press. Or use a length of clear contact as it should give you the full width and doesn't leave a pressed depression after th...

That Fleece-on PVC fabric looks pretty sweet.
Interested to hear more about it. Their website doesn't have a heap of info.

Re: WRONG 2017

So I made my first set of skis recently. Just finished a month in Japan (pretty crappy season in Japan though) and the missus loved them. I was aiming for easy turning and a smooth easy ride in some softer snow so she could progress a little in her off piste skiing. They worked perfectly as planned ...

Re: die cut base question?

I pre press all my ptex. So laid flat in the press, press it flat and sit at about 70 degress for about 30 minutes, then let it cool right offf before pulling from the press.
After diecut the pieces all stay perfectly flat, so much easier to work with.

Re: Need help with kid snowboard

I've done a couple of boards with 450gsm fibre top and bottom, 0' / 90'. 6.7mm core and they were really quite soft, even with some carbon fibre added. You could grab a bit of 5mm wood that is about 230mm wide and press it with glass and Ptex and see how flexy it is. Even a 900mm length will give yo...

Check out Divide Rides journal, in the last few pages he goes through the build of his kids board, has the whole layup in there I think.

Re: Need help with kid snowboard

The only problem I see with really thin cores is the very small inserts you will need and they will only have three turns on each screw.
I would think about 450gsm glass with only 45/45 degree tows.
Then a 6mm core will still be plenty flexy.

Intermediate women's powder ski

Hey there you awesome two plankers I need some wisdom. My missus has finally found the love for off piste and backcountry so I want to build her first pair of freeride type skis to encourage it even more. She is a mid level skier but better than she thinks she is, but I'm a boarder not skier so I'm ...

Re: Prototype 1

Even a 156cm custom X has about 1150mm running length so I'm not sure how your powder shaped board could have more camber than your custom X. Magnatraction works, it's not a gimmick. Your effective edge and running length is pretty short and your shape and camber profile probably don't match well en...

Re: The pouring urethane sidewall thread

Hey Fred, what's the viscosity like of this product you are using?
Results look good but that pot life is damn short, I think I would need something that pours pretty easily and levels from one end to be that quick.

Oh and great results mate, really nice pigment too.

Sounds pretty much exactly what you were hoping for yeah?
Nice work.
It is amazing how sensitive you get to different finished weights after building a few hey. I pick up two boards with 200 grams difference and they feel worlds apart.

Re: Setback sidecut

I've done it quite a few times on boards, swallowtail boards allow you to do it without ending up with a board full of tail. It totally changes to style of riding you need to get the most from the board and I very rarely suggest it on a board I'm building for other people. You need to power into the...

Re: Pre-treating paulownia or balsa core

As Dave has mentioned just give it a coat, then light sand before layup. I have simply brushed resin on before. It will penetrate much less than it does when heated and under pressure of the layup so will work as you need. You need to do both sides at the same time though and cure on its side or it ...
