Here's something that you guys might find interesting. For the past 6 weeks or so I've been helping to assemble, set up and commission a fairly large 5-axis CNC machine. it has 45' of travel in the X axis, 20 in the Y and 8' in the Z. It's got an aerospace grade controller which is awesome. You have...

good work, Idris. I like how you've completed your project using what you had sitting around your house.

What are you planning next?

Where did you get your edges?

Yes, our mold is a fixed size mold. Due to time constraints we didn't put much thought or time into our mold. We hope to construct another that is adjustable.

I received the base and topsheet material last night, and if all goes well we will lay up our first pair sometime this evening.

I apologise for the poor quality of the pictures. My phone is the best we've got right now. We are still waiting for our topsheet and base material, so in the meantime we are working on an automated testing system for our skis. We're going to compare the difference in flex in relation to core stiffn...

A late start to a great project.

I've been dreaming of making skis for a long time. That dream is now reality. A partner and I will be constructing a few pairs of skis as a final research project to our education. The first pair of skis will be dimensioned at 125-96-116. We will be using a vertically laminated birch core, with dura...

Edge suppliers

Does anyone know of any suppliers of edge material in north america other than snowboardmaterials.com? They're badly backourdered and out of stock. I'm having to resort to scrounging what I can from mildly used skis I'm finding at thrift stores and ski shops. It is a real pain in the ass to tear out...

I use the same epoxy as you, schuss.

$110CAD for a gallon of resin, and $40 for the hardener.

Works out to about $0.35/sqft

I think the most important factor in making a good ski is taking into account where it is going to be the type of snow you'll most likely be skiing it in.

Kind of a case of "you get what you pay for"

If you've got AutoCad, why use anything else?

Thanks for the input, guys. Michaels does offer a termostatically controlled blanket that functions at a single temperature. I'm sure it will produce more error than a PID setup would, though I'm confident that as long as it is within 10deg of the setpoint I should be fine. I'll check out the vacuum...

Questions regarding heating blankets and vacuum pressing

I've got myself a vacuum press setup that is rated at 28inHg (~.95 bar) and the next thing I want to do is purchase a heating blanket. Will a vacuum press setup create sufficient pressure to properly press a set of skis. I know 13-14psi over a large area adds up to a decent force, but how would this...
