material to cover mold
Check out steel shim stock at your local industrial supplier. I have used some in the layup. Comes in sizes from .001 and up to I am not sure, but I think around .020. Can also be used for filling in the trough between the edge tabs, and under foot for binding screw retention. I have .008. .011, and...

nomex honeycomb
With age comes wisdom. I use this line when I need to impress the younger crew and it allows me to gain a moment to try and remember the answer or sometimes even the question. You are correct. Hexel did make an alu. honeycomb ski. The walls of the comb were vertical. It looked just like one layer of...

Error correction. Should read machine nuts not screw being welded to the plate. I am sure you guys would have figured it out though.

Too many skis, not enough bindings. In my crew of teleskiers, which includes two twenty something children,as well as some more recent freestyle converts that are a blast to ski with we probably have over 25 pairs of skis that are actually used at sometime during the season. What has worked for us is...

Hose
I have been using three 4" hose sections in my 17" wide press. This worked great with a cat track to distribute the forces evenly. Three just fit in the 17" width when deflated. When laying uf some of the widest skis I make,[175-145-165] the layup of each ski was pretty much under eac...

when to super glue edges?
I have had no problem with gluing up a batch of edges and not using th em for a few months. Alcohol clean up and abrading with scotch brite pads does not effect the glue. Tip ; Once the edges are on run the tip and tail through a sheet metal roller to get a perfectly smooth radius. I happen to have ...

What to call it
Great Name. Very appropriate, as we all seem to go into our workshops and brew up numerous pieces of wood and plastic that we call skis. Good Luck.

base prep for layup
Tape is a pain. I stopped using it and found only about 7-8% of the base surface would get epoxy on it. This is never a problem as the Montana tuning machine just grinds it off during the base flattening. You can also rub paste wax on the base prior to layup as a type of mold release; just be very c...

edge bending
Thanks to hafte for the reply, it saved me a lot of typing. Here are a few additional tips. I have had no problems with the edges, and I wish that was true for all of the other processes, but given the fact that I have been a full time blacksmith, sheetmetal, and tubing bender for 25 years the edge p...

does anyone put a piece of PE over the aluminium and under the ski. I have been spoiled with the hot melt glue as a locater and shift preventer, and the easy cleanup of epoxy on the plastic. Is temperature an issue with the plastic? Any tips on preventing shift with just alum. and cleanup would be w...

I guess it is alright to reply to your own reply. In the keep it simple vien, the ideas of using a pie crust roller came to me will thinking about food while in the shower this morning. I have been applying the resin to the fabric on a separate plastic covered bench with the standard plastic squeege...

Yes, pressure is key in total saturation of composite fibers. While i know less than nothing about vacuum bagging, I have garnered a layup tip from the Norwegian boys at Strands Ski Shop. Lief, Roy, and Paul have been very helpful in my ski build adventures. Their many years in the ski industry,tour...
