Big Kam, those are sweet!
I'm wondering about the "dampening sandwich" dampening has always seemed important, but elusive. care to elaborate?

thanks

jdh, i think you have the most probable explanation. i've built ten pair in a vacuum bag and they have all come out with slightly concave bases and tops. although i haven't done it, it can be relieved by routing the core so that it steps down just inside the edge tangs taking up the space left betwe...

g-man, i just wanted to say that i think your opinions on glass, weight, core, side-cut and stiffness are right on! i've only been at this ski building for three seasons (10 pair), but i couldn't agree more. i have moved toward using triax and a light layer of biax above and below the core, the weig...

i rest the edge material on a metal surface to back it up, then use a sharp cold chisel with a good hammer blow. then snap the edge off .

i'm also using a vacuum setup under my core profiler, works great. here's a brief description i posted last year; i'm using a router bridge type profiler like as most guys are. underneath the deck of the profile jig i built a shallow box the same area as the deck. i then drilled holes in the deck ( ...

as an experiment i just added a layer of thin flashing (don't know the thickness)to the top of a finished ski that was too soft. it did a great job of stiffening, but i pressed the aluminum under 100 degrees and it took the camber right out of the ski. they'll be my new powder boards i guess. seems ...

hadley, i may be shifting away from the topic a bit , but i'm curious to see how your cap ski vacuum experiment goes. i've thought about it a lot, but my bag is a bit thick and the way the vacuum clamps down has made it impossible to really get the glass stuck to the ski all the way down the side wa...

i'm working on my tenth pair of skis and have only used wood for side walls. i simply put one coat of epoxy on them, and go skiing. there is no "going bad". the wood does get some wear from edges at the top of the ski, but if you use a hardwood the ski should last many years. i say skip th...

hey tex, in the boat building world the long stick you are using is a batten and it is an all important tool. if it is straight or at least "fair", no wobbles in it, it will bend to a beautiful curve. if you make it out of a nice piece of clear soft-wood lumber maybe 3/4" square you c...

my first pair made at the beginning of '06 was too soft under foot and too stiff in the ends. a layer of woven glass then a layer of triax under the binding, about 2 feet long made the flex curve pretty nice, but too stiff overall. since then i've been incrementally taking thickness out of the shove...

after bending a bunch of edges by hand i decided to make a form. i had to sacrifice a few lengths of edge material to get the shape and overbend right. now i just insert the end of an edge in the wooden form and bend the edge around it. the edge comes out nearly perfect, it takes a little tweaking t...

nice find! always good to see how someone else does it. that guy's got all the gear. it looked like he was joining sidewalls and core in the layup process, kinda hard to believe. i'd like to talk to him about what the extra crosswise rubber is for, damping or durability. anybody know where he is loc...

alright those skis look great! and i can say having used a couple pairs of my own new skis yesterday (we are off to a nice start here in the east) that damping is all important...and i have a long way to go. i'm wondering what you used for aluminum. is simple flashing material worth using? can't wai...

i'm using a router bridge type profiler like as most guys are. underneath the deck of the profile jig i built a shallow box the same area as the deck. i then drilled holes in the deck ( about 1" dia.)that would be hidden by the core stock when it is in place on the jig. a bigger hole in the bot...
