If you don't have super feet, or something similar, get some. Most poorly fitting boots are too large and feel sloppy. Superfeet not only give you cushion and arch support they are thicker than most boot footbeds so they take up some room in the heel and instep. There is all sorts of prefab accessor...

Finally winter is coming. I was beginning to thing that Ullr had forgotten about the northwest. I stuck a pair of naxos on these guys and made a trip to muir to give them a test drive. The TR is here

Finally, the first turns of winter. Fall was starting to get to me. I made another trip up to paradise last Monday test out my newest skis and to finish my first twelve month streak. I found plenty of new snow... and boilerplate, and rocks, and grass. The skin up was great until about 9,500. The nea...

I think, like you said, shape and stiffness probably has the most to do with a skis' performance. Even though I called the measurements I took a measure of 'pop,' it was really just a test to see how stiff the ski was. Another test could be to suspend a weight from the tip or tail of a ski and see h...

I am not an engineer but like most scientists I like to try to quantify qualitative elements. I agree that something like resistance to deflection would be one way to measure 'pop.' I tried to figure out the 'pop' of an old pair of k2 x15's. I measured the deflection of the ski when loaded with a 31...

...Pop
I moved this discussion on pop to the design/layup section. I think there is a lot that could be said about 'pop.' Everyone seems to know what pop is and what it feels like. I am hoping this thread might help quantify it and help us get figure out how to get it. Just one more thing. Can anybody give...

Thanks. Good luck with your build. The top sheet is from Tap Plastics. It seems thinner than the topsheet I got from snowboardmaterials.com and it is also far more translucent. So far I haven't had any problem with durability or UV discoloration. It is actually two sheets butted together at the wais...

...cleaned up and ready to go. My newest skis are feeling pretty good. It took a lot longer for the sealant on the sidewalls to dry than I thought it would. I added a white pigment to a marine epoxy to make the sidewalls look white rather than like wood. Either the epoxy is getting old or the pigmen...

Thanks for the info and for pointing out my spelling errors. Sometimes I hate freaking Microsoft. I was mostly referring to the precured composites. Tensioning the fibers makes a lot of sense and explains a lot of what I already read. I guess my next step is to figure out how to make my own. I would...

Resin impregnated cloth... and pop
************ I moved the "pop" section of this discussion to the design/layup section************* I am interested in procured resin impregnated fabric. Has anyone experimented with using their press to make precured laminates, either for topsheets or structural layers? I saw that snowboar...

All I know about HDPE is that it has a higher tendency to crack than UHMWPE. Maybe it is more brittle? That seems like a bad substitute for a sidewall. If you use it I would be interested to know how it works. Lots of ski manufacturers use ABS sidewalls and ABS is fairly brittle too but I'm not sure...
