Hi, first experience with a bigger pot of smooth on 310. Had in mind that the pot life was 20mins and was quite surprised that the pot turned into bright white after just 15 - of course before I poured it ;) Well, there is a german saying "wer lesen kann ist klar im vorteil" - who can read...

Hi, built a vacuum pot for degasing the PU (used the cheapest big cooking pot I could find - 18 Euros for an 11 liter pot). It really improves the results a lot, hardly any bubbles in the pured testpiece at all. The only complicated part is knowing when the resin is ready to pour - take it out too e...

Well, water based color in PU, must have been some nice foam :) But: 1.36kg not enough for a pair of skis? The way I plan it I should get 2 pairs from that amount... Will give the Task 12 a try when I figured all the tiny things you need to know when working with PU. Building a vacuum degas thingy f...

And some more reply from the distributor:
They advised me to take Smooth On Task 12. Its not cheap, but the data seems perfect:
Hardness 60D and an elongation break of 300%! If you manage to break a sidewall made with this stuff you'll be in the hospital afterwards :)

Also asked the distributor here, the answer was quite clear:
- Vacuum the resin before pouring
- Take one with a longer pot life

Hi, read in this forum that a shorter pot life reduces bubbles, thats why I was searching for a faster PU. The thought that was mentioned was that if the PU kicks faster it has less time to interact with humidity and so on => less time to form bubbles. On the other hand: the fact that bubbles appear...

Hi, had a look at all the Smooth-On products. And I found 65D. It has a very short pot life of 2.5 minutes, so something to work quick :) What I like about it compared to 3xx: A bit softer (65D instead of 70D) and a much higher elongation break of 20% (instead of 5/7.5%). And it costs exactly the sa...

Hi,

gave up the epoxy testing after having a PU test today. The flexible epoxy is just much too much changing with temperature.

Hi,

did anyone try the Smooth-On 300 instead of 305/310? Did a test with 305 today and the 7 minutes pot life seemed looooooooong. Less than half of it would be enough for me.

As far as I understand, a shorter pot life would make less bubbles.

Cheers

My main concern at the moment is that it will get too soft when in the heated press. Will try to heat it tomorrow and see how soft it gets. Also put the testpiece in the freezer again and tried to break it with all the power I have in my arms - it didn't break ;) In a finished ski, I would have litt...

Hi, made a video of a test piece. Its about 12x12mm diameter, as a real sidewall can be like. 1) Room Temperature http://www.spame.de/skibau/MVI_2253.MOV 1) Fresh out of the freezer at -18°C http://www.spame.de/skibau/MVI_2254.MOV The mixture is: Resin http://shop1.r-g.de/art/100100 +12% flexibilize...

Nearly forgot the negative part: The resin with the flex additive is very very liquid at room temp. This will be an issue when pouring the sidewalls, going into every little gap it might find. The cotton flocks would e perfect for this, as they make it nice to work with, but the bubbles... So its ei...

Testing Epoxy sidewall pouring

Hey, thought I'd open a new topic instead of hijacking the PU pouring thread. Well, did some first tests with normal epoxy + flex additive yesterday, using: http://shop1.r-g.de/item/100100 http://shop1.r-g.de/item/130140 Tried with 10% of flexibilizer so far. Result: Wow, this is no epoxy any more! ...
