Re: Blackmore

Nice work. Any skiing on your own skis, in June, in one of the worst years in history, is a good thing. FWIW, I have had base material wrapped up in a bag for a few years without reflaming and never had an issue with bonding.

Re: What happened to skibuilders.com?

It looks like they are working on it but I wouldn't count on it being updated any time soon. Much of the information was outdated and not nearly as useful as what you find in the forums. I know the forums aren't too active these days but there is a wealth of knowledge to be found if you can spend th...

Re: Blackmore

It's all part of learning. Sometimes you need to make mistakes to figure out the best way to do things. My one suggestion although too late would be to make the spacers for your crib much shorter. It will be lighter and more stable. If you used screws it will probably be fine. I used brad nails for ...

Re: Bamboo

Yep, it's hard to find reasonably priced in the form that you want it. It all seems to come from China and it's the shipping that gets you. I suggest hitting up any smaller companies that you know that use it and you could possibly piggyback on their order.

Or cut your edges short and skip the full wrap edges. Quick and easy.

Re: Blackmore

I second using a planer for core profiling. After messing around with a router setup I built a few sleds for the planer and found it to be much faster and more accurate. I drew up the thickness profile on a cad program and took measurements every 10 centimeters to make the spacers. It takes some tim...

Re: Divide Rides

Those boards look gorgeous! I'm sure the kids are stoked. If I got those when I was a kid they would be in my bedroom with me. It's not easy to find specialized gear like that for kids in most shop racks. I hear what you're saying about changing priorities. Just owning a house seems like a full time...

Re: Blackmore

What type of terrain are you planning this ski for? My initial impressions are that the tip is very low, there is a lot of tip to tail taper, and a lot of tip rocker especially in relation to the tail rocker. Also keep in mind that you will lose some tip height depending how long your core extends i...

Re: Soul Skis

Dtrain, did you try the BBCode? That's what I used for the link. When you say "your Photobucket is gone" are you not able to access the pictures on your account anymore? I still see them in your journal. Is that the only place you have them stored? When I open the image in a new tab, it do...

Re: Wood Top Sheet on Existing Skis

I have never done a veneer topsheet but I don't think that you would have any problem with bonding to the old ski. I know I have read some info about veneer finishing so the info should be buried in here somewhere or perhaps someone else can chime in. I'm concerned with how many holes are in the ski...

Re: Soul Skis

Man it's been quiet around this site. Here's a couple of builds from this season that I have been meaning to post. The first pair was a Christmas present for the wifey. I based them on a previous pair that she loved but made them a little wider with fancy new graphics. My one blunder was stapling th...

Re: Making it big?

Just like Warren MIller said, "The best way to make a small fortune in the ski industry is to start out with a large one".

Exactly why I never dove into it. Plus, I enjoy skiing every day and owning a business would definitely get in the way.

Re: Bamboo/Cork Sidewalls

I have never seen cork used in sidewalls and it throws up a red flag for me. Not so much for water damage reasons but because it won't have the strength and hardness of plastic or all bamboo. If you ride in areas that you might hit a rock or do any sort of park riding, I see that edge compressing an...

Re: Setback sidecut

I has been awhile since I have done more than a single radius sidecut. I have kept it simple trying to minimize creating more garage ornaments. Single radius are more predictable but combination sidecuts definitely work. They just require a little more experimentation. I have skied some amazing mult...

Re: Setback sidecut

I made a pair of fatties and come think about it I am not so sure why I set the sidecut back in the first place. Maybe I was focused on dimensions but it turns out I don't like it at all. I think I might have been trying to achieve a certain taper from tip to tail, putting the narrowest part of the ...
