Re: How crucial is it to epoxy sidewalls to core pre-layup?

We wet up the sidewalls along with the core and put them in the mold. We use a retention wall on the side of the cavity to hold the sidewalls in place. The clearance allows the glass to go up outside the sidewall and out of the mold which traps the sidewall. We keep the clearance so that it holds th...

Re: Setback sidecut

I think more about what percentage of the ski is the waist placed. For freeride skis I usually use ~56% when measured from the tip. This seems to give my skis a good balance of turn initiation while maintaining float so you don't feel like you might go over the front of the ski. For a front side ca...

I decided to put two layers of glass under the heat blanket and cover it with 1/8 inch rolled aluminum on the bottom. I think the plastic will soften and move around too much. (IE ptex). I am worried about the skis not coming out flat with plastic so I decided on the uncured glass. This is the botto...

Heat Blanket Layup

I am working on a new formblock layup and will install heat blankets on top of the mdf formblocks. I have been told that it is good to put a piece of uncured fiberglass on both sides of the blanket to keep from burning the formblocks if they over heat or short. I was thinking of adding a layer of pt...

We have been testing skis all winter long on some all mountain skis and found the as little as 5mm change made a difference in the way the ski initiated. I even did some blind changes to the position without telling them what I did and let them ski a couple of runs on the same terrain. If I made mor...

They aren't looking for freebee stuff. This was a legitimate request for someone interested in getting involved with these guys that is around the Whistler area. What they are looking for is someone with good cad experience and some history of doing some design work and is familiar with ski design. ...

Binding Placement

I have been mounting all the skis that I have with demo bindings so I can move both heels and toes forward and aft. I am amazed at how much different the skis perform with just a few millimeters difference. I mounted a pair of 176 skis at the recommended mount point and I have an average foot size. ...

[quote="skidesmond" Going for dampness. I have no problem going with 1 layer, just not sure if it should go on the bottom or top. Leaning toward top to aid in binding retention. Just curious about using one layer of metal. I was taught that you want to create equilibrium in your layup to a...

Sort of the same thought here but now on a Rocker ski

So I am working on a rocker ski right now with about a 30m rocker. It would appear to me that the true center of a rocker ski and the waist now have a pretty important relationship. I am thinking that where the tip and tail begin to turn up would be pretty close to level and the waist should be behi...

Where I'm a bit cloudy is with the Length of Sidecut versus True Effective Edge measurements. It appears the arc of the turn does not meet it "end points" until the True Effective Edge marks... why is this not also the Length of Sidecut? Thanks for all the feedback. As far as the sidecut ...

Wouldn't it be more advised to make the turning radius in the tip to be smaller than the tail so the ski engages easily initially and releases easily instead of being locked into a tighter radius at the end of the turn? Has nothing to do with your question but the camber radius and apex play a role...

Placement of the Mid Running Surface on a Directional Ski

http://s172.photobucket.com/user/CADMAN_2007/media/GENERAL%20SKI%20SHAPE.jpg.html?sort=3&o=3[img][/img] I am working on a directional ski with longer blend curves at the front than at the tail. Since the tip is longer than the tail, the mid point of the effective edge is further back than the tr...

MRS stands for Mid Running Surface. It is the half way point between the FCP (forward contact point, where the tip starts to bend up) and the ACP (Aft contact point, where the tail starts to bend up) on conventional cambered skis. Sorry for the abbreviations. FEE - Forward Effective Edge (widest poi...

I also am sure to make when the ski is pressed is that the height of the camber is placed at the waist location of the ski That is interesting that you use the waist of the ski as your highest point on your camber. I have hand measured a lot of skis and the thickest point on the profile is more at ...
