Here is the patent application. http://www.google.com/patents/US20140062064 The first method of using a machined out flat steel plate that doubles as the edge seems heavy. The second method of cutting a channel in the ptex for the edge to sit in is not really that new, essentially use the ptex shee...

Have you sketched out the design? It would be great to see. I wondering why you rejected two balls screws one motor? I would have though this was a great solution if racking is a worry? Nii, wow. Guru!!! I did consider 2 screws one motor and that can be tried if one screw alone doesn't prove adequa...

How will you drive your long axis? You say you want 2.6m of travel, but only mentioned 1.8m ballscrews...that's why I'm asking ;) Correct I have about 1.75m of usable driving length when I allow for a bit of unused at each end, just enough to sneak in a snowboard core nicely. The rails were 2.6m lo...

If the motors and drivers were cutting aluminium on another machine, I don't see why you should think they won't on you design. The rails you have are made of solid stuff, this is above the minimum I have seen used on large format machines cutting deeply into 2 inch aluminium plate. Take a look at ...

Richie - this is what I think I know based on what I have read in the past Ballsrcews - the main practical issue is whipping, The main technical issues relate to those outlined in the decisions made when designing the Z-axis: http://www.cncroutersource.com/leadscrew.html . Resonance, with the addit...

4th axis , or just 4th motor as a 2nd x-axis motor
You can slave an axis with Mach3 so A follows X for example. You just have to hope they stay in check. Running 2 motors on one axis with servos I am too chicken to do as I doubt they would follow so well, I had considered it but then opted for one large screw and a stiff gantry design so I get negli...

Thanks Twizz/Richie. GeckoDrive 540 is a great product and a really great site for background reading. Unfortunately, I will be running four motors, so I've had to scrub them from my list. They have a great reputation, clearly well deserved. SS - E, has a great reputation too. I've read a few comme...

I'm using a GeckoDrive G540. I don't know what its limitations are, but it works for my machine. There was literally nothing for me to learn or figure out, I just plugged my motors in (they had DB9 connectors already), plugged it into the computer, and I was up and running. It does use a parallel p...

I'm at that stage where I need to think seriously about Motion Control Cards. Does anyone have a view? Good/bad experiences? I done the usual reading around - this was quite useful: http://www.automation.com/pmd/MotionControlCardsforMachineDesign.pdf Depending of costs, I would tend towards Etherne...

When you setup your motor tuning in Mach3, you define the maximum speeds and accelerations. Even if you do a manual override of the speed defined in your gcode, it won't go faster than the speeds defined in the motor tuning. I still haven't ever done soft limits or limit switches on my machine - I ...

very cool. I ordered a customized 2' x 8' kit from cncrouterparts.com. A long road of building, learning, building, learning, breaking, rebuilding, repeat. But, couldn't be happier. Could have got a $20,000 shopbot and be in the same boat!!! Yeah I agree, the thing I am most worried about is my ser...

Congrats on the project! Having a big CNC router has been so much fun, you'll find you use it for a lot of stuff other than just ski-building (I've been doing a lot with VCarvePro the past year). I love how you've got everything consolidated in that one box, that looks really nice. yes I am looking...
