montucky- what are you referring to? making a stiff ski? no one in the world?! well thats pretty sweet, finally i have some original thought! i grew up racing skis and i could never find a stiff enough ski. so i built one, and it is super stiff. and seems to perform pretty well right out of the gate...

alright alright alright i thought the skis performed amazing all around. groomers, killed it. the crud, loved it. and the freshie fresh, good to go too. though i think the heavy side cut/small radius was working a little against me in the untouched stuff. i think a stiff rocker ski is a good way to ...

are stiffer skis harder on the body?

i have always preferred a stiff ski. so my most recent personal ski is the stiffest ski i have built. bamboo, about 12 mm underfoot and 5mm in the tip and tail pre-pressing. with 20 ounce tri-axe. i threw some dynafits on them. rocker tip, 85mm underfoot, 165cm length, a nice short radius, heavy sid...

I have posted a lot about binding rentention related concepts. I figured there was an iso standard. I don't really want to shove out 80 Swiss franks to see it though. Can you guys summerize? What's the secret to a safer design?

I wonder if a mount job on purely wood would have similar strength characteristics compared to the same wood with a layer of 20 ounce glass. Composites are brittle and don't do a great job with mechanical fasteners, so maybe in reality the wood will do most of the work. Rubber reinforced glass. that...

extra layers of glass underfoot?pre-mature release bindings?

i have not been using an extra layer of fiberglass underfoot but i have noticed that a lot of people are doing this. i think a too soft of flex underfoot might cause some alpine bindings to pre-release. Recently i made a pretty soft ski for my lady friend. she mounted them with fritschi eagles. i th...

Selling Cores locally in Washington State

I have the capabilities to make top notch cores. Any mix of wood, book match, whatever. I am offering this service to anyone in need in Washington state, because it would have to be a local pick up. Shipping cores would be too expensive. (non profiled cores however, I can make profiled cores, but I ...

monitor those heat lamps otherwise you might burn your house down and then the neighbors will probably think that you were cooking meth. and on the same note about burning your house down. everyone be careful if you use any flammable resin systems, and with excessive saw dust! some guy i met on moun...

I use wood side walls, but i am not afraid of UHMWPE. Are you going to match your cores side cut to your skis side cut? this way you will get an even width of sidewall up and down the length of the ski. Or are you going to make straight cores that do not have a side cut to them then you are going to...

I would recommend using the slow cure hardener (thats the 206, the fast is the 205). your pot life is pretty short with the fast cure, and the gel and working time with the fast is not long also. cure time on the slow cure depends on factors but it isnt too bad. its a safer bet to use the slow cure....

Nice twizz, I work at the composite manufacturing center in frederickson wa. We make the 777 empennage and the 787 tail fin. I program the NC composite tape laying machines.

I have never stepped foot in a 787 though.

i think a couple folks said this now, but i will echo it: I believe that it is the ramp up that is causing the air bubbles. You are most likely ramping up too quickly to your cure temp and thus the resin is starting to cure before all of the air has time to escape, thus trapping the air inside. I be...

are you talking about off the shelf face grain wood, or still laminating to get vertical grain, but just with 1 species of wood? i have done both and both worked great! for a species like rock maple, you can profile your cores a little thinner to save weight. they can turn out heavy and too stiff. i...

what kind of resin system are you using? if you use something like west systems epoxy, you dont need any heat, just a comfortable 70 degree room temperature will do.

sounds like a lot of work for not a huge payout, and super risky.

Maybe the cores are creating a concave surface during pressing. and with that concavity, the bubbles might gather towards the center of the board. your boards are probably flat going into the press, but maybe the edges and vds and hard plastic sidewalls are creating a concavity in the middle of the ...
