I've tried bonding a few types of rubber. Thought rubber tip spacers would be a good idea. But.... first I tried rubber gasket material. sanded it with 80 grit, washed with acetone. Came apart the first time I flexed it. Next tried a piece of car inner tube. It bonded better but after flexing it 20 ...

treatment for wood sidewalls
Just putting this out there. I've been thinking about using linseed oil on my wood sidewalls. My thinking is that it will absorb deeper into the maple than epoxy or urethane. If anyone has any thoughts or has had a bad experience with this please let me know. How would it affect base and topsheet? Y...

I just spent a bit of time looking back through old posts. It turns out it was Marks planer profile jig that gave me the bendy MDF idea! Credit were credit is due :D Gast vacuum pumps seem to be reasonably priced, but I would still think about using an old fridge pump. (if mine ever breaks down) Rec...

yea! skibuilder's order arrived today. Dropped off the 186's and the 127's at Guides Hut. We dug around in the bin and found some wide brakes for some old tyrolia rental bindings I had kicking around. (taking kids binders off her last years pair.) Core blanks are trimmed to shape have maple sidewall...

That's awesome, I'm still laughing. might have to try that with my failed ski. just to see how well it bonded. I'm still not convinced that p-tex side walls are worth the effort. we'll see how the pine sidewalls on my 186's hold up. my latest core has maple sidewalls. hope to get those pressed in th...

nice work! Yes, leave your bases attached to your template until you get edges on. this should help with warping I bend my edges days before until they can just sit on the template with one clamp I also label my template sides 1+2 then bend edges and label them 1+2 these get glued to the base that g...

rockaukum, thanks for the tip I've been doing almost exactly as Idris suggested. I tape down my base with double sided carpet tape, then align my core exactly where I want it. while holding it in place I hot glue small wood locators in 4 spots (2 on either side of the core). then i set the core asid...

Yup, my bases (oops I meant core) didn't sit all the way down, prebent tips, tails and all. When i laid up the first pair (kids) I used a strips of paneling as locators. When i laid up the next pair I used some thin leftover strips of core. This time I went with the paneling. Obviously it was too th...

Well today was my first big ski building disappointment. Laid up my latest ski last night. First of the rockers. I guess my core locator's were not quite tall enough, so my core shifted... quite a bit! I have no core under one edge and 1 birch sidewall protruding beyond the other. So i guess its tim...

wood for cores
I was at the lumber store yesterday looking for something more substantial than the SPF I've been using for cores. After digging around for a while (and making quite a mess) i stumbled upon a 1x8 rough piece of birch, about 7ft long. nice straight grain no knots. $20 seemed pretty good. (less than 1/...
