I could be wrong but I want to say that hardness and stiffness are two different things. If I were you I'd call the number that was in the pdf you linked (at the bottom) and try to get as much info on the physical properties of the epoxy as you can. Like the properties listed for WestSystems. One th...

I don't have an answer, but if you know the specific model/type number of the epoxy it might help some one who does.

And you should send me a few gallons.

Ok that was easy to find, and it was the FS not USDA whatever.

Wood Handbook--Chapter 4--Mechanical Properties of Wood (pdf) and the other chapters here.

Well they have a generic brich, maple and poplar available. What species are these generic woods? I'm in SoCal I don't know, but going off of the USDA "Comercially Important Woods" pamphlet for a good guess... The only poplar they list is yellow. The physical properties are pretty close f...

Re: carbon and balsa core: ultralight skis

2lbs a pair! Holy crap! Nice work man, but where are the pics? ;) Incase anyone else was wondering the 200 and 400 g/m^2 fabrics are ~6 and ~12 oz/yard^2, if I did the conversion right. I think it was me and you discussing balsa in another thread, and you were trying to convince me that the end grai...

Re: core profiler

I am very confused as to how making a core profiler like this one will do for me. It allows you to acurrately taper the thickness of the core, thinner at the tips for a nice round flex. how do you actually router the shape of the ski you want? You don't. You make a template out of MDF that has the ...

With modern stuff, basically there's zero difference. Many companies just change the topsheet, eg Line/Karhu and K2. Perhaps tele skis are generally slightly softer. But then people tele on Explosiv's and Stockli's and have a blast. Just pick/make the ski that fits your style.

The small piece at the binding area on top of the carbon doesn't look like glass. As he applies it on the second ski you can see it doesn't bend through and he presses the piece on the ski with his thumbs. It wouldn't surprise me if it is titanal or something else which can hold the screws better. ...

Good post, hose-man. Based on the vid and the desciption of their construction on the site, this is what I'm guessing. Bottom to top- -base and edges -two 1" strips rubber, plus rubber "squares" on the tips -one layer triax glass -strip of carbon (uni?) down the middle 2-3" ? -co...

Yeah Burton is/was doing that. I can't find the patent I was looking at, but one where they're talking about "non-orthogonal" grain directions in cores is #6105991. But I'm pretty sure that Burton was using end-grain balsa mixed with vertical grain harder woods. And http://www.pat2pdf.org/...

I watched the Karhu/Line factory video and some snowboard factory one, expecting to see how they did it. But neither showed how they bend the edges.

I've been thinking about balsa too. But why are you guys thinking about end grain balsa, instead of having the grain run the usual way?
