I use two layers of masonite of about 4mm thick with a 0.8mm aluminium plate on it. Both for the bottom and top mold. The ribs in the mold have about 20 mm of space in between them. I press around 5 bar (70 psi) but without heat. Works great, however the aluminium is very sensitive too scratches etc...

Just finished my planer based core profiler that uses spacers. So time for some pictures... This is what the result looks like. The profiler is made out of 18 mm thick MDF. - if you use sidewalls, then you obviously have to apply the contour first, glue the sidewalls and then profile the core (otherwise sidewalls won't glue on 2mm thick core for example) - I wouldn't use a jigsaw to apply the contour around the pin and tails if they are just 2mm...i'd be to afraid to ...
