Well, what did I do during the long time that I didn’t post anything at my own ski building journal? Of course I tested my first pair of homebuild skis! They were a bit soft with 10 mm under the boot and a 600 gr/m^2 fibreglass layer on top and bottom, but the skied fantastic! Furthermore when I saw...

Yeah, too busy with a lot of things... sorry! They skied pretty good, but were a little too soft, but it was a fantastic experience to ski on my first pair of homebuild skis! :) Last time I have been busy doing some calculation on the ski stiffness etc. as some of you know. Just finished some update...

Bambi, as you can read in the post about the deconstruction of the Dynastar troublemaker, the glassfibre layer is about 1 mm thick for biaxial fibre of probably 600gr/m^2 (22 oz right?). It might be that this thickness differs from the composite thickness when building your own skis because in ski i...

Dynastar Troublemaker deconstructed
This afternoon I met someone (Dirk) from a Dutch ski forum who is doing a course on evolutionary product development for his study industrial design at Twente University of Technology (The Netherlands). For this he deconstructed a Dynastar Troublemaker ski, below you see the layup around the binding...

Hi Setto, I think the wooden beams will be able to hold a very high pressures. But I am concerned about the connection point of the threaded rod to the wooden beams. I am not sure if the wood will be able to resist the high stresses that oocur there. Also wood is a very unpredictable (non homogeneou...

Yesterday I added base material, edges, sidewalls and deflection due to shear to my MATLAB ski model (and made the code faster). As expected this makes the model a lot stiffer. I also noticed that the shear is neglectible compared to the bending deflection. I will post the new MATLAB files later on....

I did write my own simple FE code in Matlab, I did build it as you can read above. About the load, the load is a line load, so it should be in N/mm. This is only an error in the text in the uploaded pic. Thanks! I did just put some load on the ski to test it. See te loads below (also in N/mm): Ptipb...

We use Matlab a lot at university, it's a great tool! I'm a fond of open source software as well, but I prefer Matlab because I am used to it and I can get it for free at my university. Another alternative open source program is Scilab http://www.scilab.org/ For the FEA model I simply used a 1D beam...

MatLab ski calculation
Hi there, After a great post of Bambi a while ago about an Excel sheet to calculate the stiffness / deflection of a ski I was inspired to work on this as well. Last weeks in my free time I have been working on some MatLab code to show the following: - Ski contour - Ski profile - 3D view of the ski c...
