You need about three time less carbon to get the same stiffness.
Carbon under compression is just a bit stiffer than glass, while in tension is much stiffer, so it is better to put a layer under the core than above the core.
I dos not really matter what the big companies are doing.

They introduced this thing few years ago. It is very easy to make it at home. For example, if your ski is 80mm wide at waist and 120 mm wide at tip, just use a unidirectional glass tape 80mm wide: the fiber density (glass/ski width) will be higher in the middle than at tip and tail. Then use standa...

These are mine plywood skis, built using 4mm thick, 3-ply birch plywood.

I made 4 or 5 pairs like that, before switching to vertical laminated woodcore, which I bought already tapered.

Plywood skis are good, no particular problem using them.

... my first pairs were built without any vds and they still hold up great. the evil twins now have 30 days on them and there is no problem at all. so why using vds?! Good question. Never used VDS for my skis. Using VDS just because the companies it is not such a good argument. If the edges are wel...

Well, I would built a second one and use them for skiing. Anyway, it was a good idea to extend the reverse camber/sidecut to skwals.

New, 4000 years old design

In this topic http://www.skibuilders.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1601 I posted a video about some very old wood skis, used today in central Asia. I think that, besides the construction method, also the geometry is rather interesting. http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll304/davide72/NEOski.jpg The sk...

A friend of mine used a screw press and he did not use water.

That is nice to see that somebody is experimenting a bit, rather than just copying a pneumatic press.

Go ahead.

I measured the deflection of the ski when loaded with a 31.8kg weight at its midpoint. 1)Would it work to just measure the percentage of camber lost when the ski is set on a flat surface? It seems that my skis with more pop are less prone to losing camber when set down on a flat surface. All these ...

It is not very smart: in case of big cambers, there will be no long wood fibers running entirely from tip to tail.
