Hi chrismp, I like your design but I am concerned that you are only using one strategy to deal with the forces your press will encounter. I am thinking about your choice of bolts to take the entire load and of their strength. A grade 8.8 M12 bolt has a shear strength of 13.5 kN this converts to 3,03...

I ask because I made an unbalanced pair of skis with 34oz fiberglass on the bottom of the cores but 18oz on the top. This has lead to enhanced camber but decreases in tip/tail rocker and a very flat tip. Did it decrease once removed from the press, or after some time skiing it ? The tip has flatten...

This is awesome Yves!!!! I like the simplicity and innovative use of materials in your press and skis. I am curious about the balance of composite materials in your skis. Will the composites under the core be balanced by the raised wood areas on the top of your skis or do you anticipate needing to a...

After pouring a line of epoxy down the base I brush the epoxy into the teeth and onto the base. I am not super meticulous because the pressing process squeezes epoxy into the voids but I do like the control a brush gives me. I use my fingers to apply a coat of epoxy to both sides of the vds strip pr...

I think formica is a paper layer that is soaked in a resin and then cured with heat to become solid sheets. The resins are not engineered to deal with constant movement and temperature extremes found in skis. Why not use the same process with a paper substrate, maybe with a layer of kevlar non woven...

There are photos of some, including my own, wood/metal presses in this thread: http://skibuilders.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2196&highlight= My press does not deflect very much. It is stronger than it needs to be....which is good enough. The wood is mostly filler and the steel carries the load. ...

I make half of a template on the factory straight edge of a mdf trim board (drawing a line and following it with thin flexible mdf and jigsaw/router/belt sander). Then, with a router (flush trim bit), I copy it on the other edge and put these back to back and create another whole template. If I spre...

I tape, face to face, the two layers of base material together. Then I clamp them to a mdf template and use a router with a flush trim bit to follow the template. I vary the size of the bearing to increase the overall dimension of the ski if I want wider skis. I have to shave some ptex strands off t...

I have repressed skis with success without a heated set up. I've had a few pairs come out too stiff. For these I planed and sanded off the topsheet, top layers of carbon and glass down to the core+tip spacers. I sanded the cores down a bit and then replaced the carbon+glass+topsheet and repressed wi...

I'm remodeling my house and have been recycling the old growth douglas fir from the old studs and joists and from a bowling alley section I purchased on craigslist. I'm using the bowling alley and some of the old wood for countertops and a headboard for my bed. I think I can get four ski cores from ...

horizontal veneer/two mold process

I fondled some afterbangs the other day and I am intrigued by the materials. I read the thread http://skibuilders.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2859 and have contacted Ryan at http://www.roarockit.com/ they only offer thick veneer in 48" lengths. I think their veneers will work. I am curious if an...
