I would try a stronger vacuum pump. I have had waves under a veneer layer before from a vacuum hose line that partially melted shut and also probably from not scraping the resin off the laminate fiber thoroughly enough in lay-up.

Hey Gilo, unrelated, but I would put your uni carbon under the glass on the deckside. Uni carbon is pretty thin and is less prone to failure in compression if it has some glass over it or a veneer layer over it. For color, You have opaque pigment for your resin or some kind of very thin fabric. If y...

I second MM, before becoming a bc boarder all I did was ski bumps. Metal was always discouraged because it would get bent. No carbon just E-glass to be able to deform deep and handle it. Toughness and front end energy absorption is the goal, you could add Innegra throughout or S-Glass in the tail if...

I was having a hard time trying to find the time to laminate a board for personal use. Finally got a short window of time from work and being a Dad. Wet out the base and edges real well, wet out the core, placed them together all perfectly aligned in a long vacuum bag ready to go. Then I realized I ...

I think it is too far even for what I've been trying to do. I've been trying to think around ways to improve the compressive strength of real thin carbon layers on the deck side of splits. Another challenge with adding the nano-powders to improve resin and overall laminate toughness is that it alrea...

Ha, That's kinda what I have been learning. Thanks for the quick response. Reckon I'll just use the maple I have and adjust flex and weight elsewhere in the recipe.

It looks like the bow makers gobble up any clear yew at pretty good prices if you find some good logs.

DTrain,
Hey I saw your skis with the yew sidewalls on facebook. I'm trying to increase the compressive strength of some paulownia cores without stiffening them up too much. Does the yew wood seem more flexible than say hard maple?

Do you have a referral for finding some pacific yew?

I read it increases compressive strength of a laminate by 13% to 18%, but much more of an increase in strength after a tested laminate has had an impact. I'm not so sure that skis and boards are experiencing impacts on top side where this increase in compressive strength would be significant. On a r...

Let us know how it worked out. It looks like it clips are not that sensitive to being perfectly lined up along the nose to tail direction. If they don't line up you can always fabricate a basic clip like I do and template the holes for where the screw posts are. I kinda think these clips and the ide...

I have done ski screws into Ipe wood plugs set in the deck with success but that is with a much thicker board than standard and vacuum pressing the deck composites. The above picture is one insert and one ski screw per side. I have often thought that a cool approach for a thinner more standard board...

I've had excellent delivery from snowboard materials for years (more than a decade probably). Just order it.

hmm, everything I've read independently and learned from family members in the aerospace field is that resins resist impact, cracking and adhere better after their specified temp cure from linking up and forming longer molecular strands.

Hey stormyclouds, Love the elm topsheet and the tints as well! Are the gray and green boards tinted resin? They look pretty awesome. I reckon your next step is to heat cure. It might actually add stiffness, but definitely will add toughness and adhesion to your laminates. Even 130 to 140F for two ho...

Have a look at 1/2" carpet tacks, super sharp, flat heads which should bond well despite a smaller head size.
