Hey skidsmond, yea, did the same layup, base VDS /FG/ core/ FG/ Pbt topsheet. My thought was that the upper and lower FG layers would come together and make a nice "Box" . It seams that when the hose pushed the topsheet material down it sealed onto the alumunun cassett and trapped resin be...

Cap ski made with press???

Been trying to build a cap ski with my press, haven't had the best of luck. I first tried with fire hose only (no cat track) and 1/4" #40 rubber, with a 25 degree side bevel. I only got the topsheet to go about half way down the sidewalls. I then got some discharge hose that was much more flexa...

I have a few pair with purple heart sidewalls. It is very dense, I think it is hard also. It has held up very good after 30 or so days, probably better than most. I am working on a ski now that has purple heart in the center, brazilian walnut , tip, and tail (sidewalls) KT

Veneer Question!

Hey, I have been using some wood veneer on 10 or so skis now, different species, all with NO backing. I now want to use bamboo veneer but can only find it with paper, or felt backing. I know some of you have had problems (delams) with paper backed veneer. Any ideas how to get good bonding with this ...

Hemp Question???

Hello all, I am working on a pair of skis and I want to try to use Hemp instead of the 22 oz. tri-ax fiberglass I have used in the past. Just wondering what weight Hemp would be close to the same, I have found 19 oz. and also 22 oz. Hemp. Any suggestions would be great, Thanks....KT

Yo Wingworks, I would like to here more on the "Cap Construction" with your press, very interested in trying to pull that off. On your stiffness problem, I do my cores with 2/3rds poplar, with 1/3rd. bamboo (bamboo on the outside, sidewalls) and good dimensions for me are .380 to .400 in t...

I have always used superglue, a drop on the edge in 4 or 5 places along both sides of the ski works great. The glue eats through the mold release agent just fine, careful not to get to much (if any) on the base material it can cause "pitting" if you will............KT

Thanks for the thoughts Twizz. I have done poplar cores, and have found a good flex for some of my skis. Most of the poplar cores are from .400 to .480 center to .080 to .100 at tip and tail with the same 20 cm flat underfoot. With that said, that is why I am concerned about going thinner on the bam...

Thanks for the comments, and info. When I say the cores are 10mm to 12mm that is the thickness from one core to another, depending on length of ski. I just pulled out my most recent pair 143/106/130 @ 156cm. Short and fat (just like my wife) JK. The skis are still very stiff even with the 17oz. fibe...

I got a stiffy!!

Well it's that time of year. I have a core question for you all. All my past skiis have been a little on the stiff side, ( some real stiff). I am using bamboo for the core, with bamboo sidewalls. all vertical laminate. My cores are from 10 mm to 12mm center (20cm flat underfoot) taper to 2mm to 2.5m...

Heat "Receipt"

Hello all, I know this has been talked about alot, and I have read up on alot of different ideas, but i have to ask. I am using a bottom blanket only, my die has built in camber of 10mm @ a 180cm ski. I am getting more camber with the more heat I use. I currently press at 50 psi, heat at 90 f. for 4...

Yo Doughboy, What about a waterjet? Cut out a male and female die with maybe .0100 or so clearance. I would think that some 1/4" Cold Roll flat would do the trick. My question would be how to keep the alignement perfect between the upper and lower dies, (some kind of dowl pins, with a return sp...
