SHIF, Why do you do the temp ramp up and press for such a long time? Is this your formula, or did qcm suggest this? I am curious because some manufacturers use qcm and cook their boards for 12 minutes or less at 175. I am especially curious about the first half hour with no heat. I don't get the be...

...then run the router over it to get a channel along the sidewall to compensate for edge... I’m not convinced the edge tabs cause major issues achieving a flat base. Just yesterday I used a Wintersteiger Micro 71 tuning machine to finish the bottoms of my latest ski build. Out of the press I detec...

...I'm using EVH 0043 and ECA 408... Exact same epoxy and curing agent that I use. Seems to have the longest pot life of any combo QCM offers. I transfered the corrosive curing agent into a one quart rectangular tin can having a screw-on cap. That stuff is really nasty and I don't like its original...

I have pressed several pairs of skis so far and experimented with bladder pressure and temperature parameters quite a bit. My lower press form is a heated aluminum sheet based on the construction described in the “articles” section of this great web site. My press frame is steel I-beams with a 88” l...

...I got some primer that's supposed to help bond this stuff to sidewall. Have any of you used this primer? Results? I'm going to do some comparison tests on small mockups Primer?? Do tell. What is this primer? I use QCM epoxy for my ski building, never heard of this primer. My skis have UHMW sidew...

I think heated ski presses will yield much less spring-back in the finished ski. I get mine cooking at 190 degrees F and they exhibit very little spring-back. I think heating the core above 170 changes the properties of the wood fibers, releases their memory. That's what they told me at a local Wood...

Did you use the bladder to form the alum. sheet to the mold? No. I rolled the first sheet over the edge of my work table and worked it by hand into a curve at the tips. The second time I did not pre-bend it at all. I let the fasteners hold it against the bladder. In use, the air pressure presses it...

The fabric is an orange swirl design from Joann Fabrics. Looks OK but not as cool as most others. The QCM ECA-408 curing agent I used is very dark amber in color and makes everything look dark when pressed. http://www.qcminds.com/eca-408.htm The P-tex bases are also orange colored, from snowboardmat...

what rhymes with orange?
Ya, orange is cool. Nice work.
I made some orange sticks last Christmas.
The cores are poplar and Brazillian redwood. This dark wood is way too heavy for this use. Never again. Only bamboo these daze.

This may be a silly question but are you guys using the planer to create the core thicknesses over the length of the skis/board? I.E. 7mm at center and 2mm at ends. Are the planers that auto adjust over lengths of material? Greg YES, the planer is used to create the basic tapers on each end of the ...

To cut a clean hole in the fire hose simply insert a piece of wood inside first and then use a round hole arch punch and hammer. The wood supports the material being cut and prevents cutting through the other side of the hose.

I like how you are adjusting the height. I may use something like this in my jig. I attach my cores at the low end with an aluminum clamp bar to resist the cutting forces of the planer knives. This image shows a tapered end clamped down for tapering the other end of the core: http://www.fototime.com...

Is your tube rated for higher pressures? No glue is used in my bladder. I use a pair of 2 inch steel angle pieces with 1/4-28 grade 8 bolts and nuts every 2 inches to clamp the fire hose closed at each end. No worries at 60 psi although I settled on 35 psi as the optimum pressure for making skis. I ...
