Thats an interesting point Davide. My consideration simplified the ski to a structure were forces will affect from the center (like the mentioned wing of an airplane). The center part of a ski is almost rigid and forces from the binding will directly go into the top layer. You mentioned doing some s...

Yes - this ski is just made for deep Powder - so i wanted to be shure that's it got enough surface. Last winter there were some days i was almost drowning with my 168cm Voelkl Gotama. Here's a comparision to my Gotama and a 163cm Sugar Daddy: http://www.wildplaces.de/bilder/vergleich.jpg The Tip is ...

That's strange - many companies (Völkl, Atomic,...) use 2mm bases for there Freeride Skis - so there should be something on the market. As far as i understood Isosport they can provide individual strenth of base material. Minimum amount is a 200m roll (about 200 EUR). A thick base becomes interestin...

I used a simple hand planer (not eletric powered) to profile the core. But i used some preshaped wood strips (5x20mm and 5x40mm) i glued together in one layer at tip and tail and two layers in the middle. So i only had to shape tip and tail sections and a smooth transition from 10 to 5mm strength. T...

Great idea - we should include some skiing (Nordkette or so) to see the constructions under real world conditions :D

Endre, i'm realy interested in Topsheets and thick base material/edges (2mm). I've only got regular base and edges in 1,2mm. So if you can share some for 2 or 3 pairs of ski it would be wonderfull. Meeting in Munich would be a great thing - just let me know when you arrive! Stubai is on my plans for...

Hi Endre,

did you contact Isosport and Deutsch before? I asked them for materials about half a year ago and they told me that the minimum quantities are 200m rolls!

Do you travel via Munich - maybe we can arrange a meeting to talk a little bit about ski building?

Bending a ski means tension on the lower laminate (maximum close to the base) and pressure on the top layer. These forces will shift both layers against each other. To compensate the forces you need a connection between both layers taking the shearing forces. This can be implemented by a complete co...

Hmm - that's interesting - the only reason i see for moving back too wood is the dampening (absorbing vibrations). Do you know more details? Delamination? Was this because of the enormous difference in stiffness between wood and carbon just making it pop off? The bonding with the epoxy should be abs...

Yes - prices are just crazy - but people seem to pay it. Here in Munich there are some dealers selling ski for more than 800,-EUR and they have much more than one pair in stock!!!! But that wasn't the thing i wanted to make you know. I've been watching the company (former db) for some time and what'...

Edges are hardened to keep them sharp and make them resist impact from rocks. The edges i use are completely hardened (not only on the surface). If you try to bend them they will break at a certain angle. Heating them (glowing red) makes them soft again. If you like can get them hard again after ben...

Yes, this is Carbon UD Tape. It is just used on the top side of the ski to increase the stiffness. The laminate is composed of: 1. 395g/m2 glass fabric 2. 400g/m2 biaxial glass 3. Woodcore (Fir) with Airex foam tip 4. 400g/m2 biaxial glass 5. 395g/m2 glass fabric 6. 220g/m2 UD glass tape and carbon ...
