snoCAD-X -- free, open source ski and snowboard CAD

Post by Head Monkey »

This post contains the current status of snoCAD-X and will be kept up to date. Last updated for v1.0.7.b.

snoCAD-X is an open source CAD program for designing skis and snowboards. It was written by Dan Graf of Graf Snowboards in 2007 and has been widely used since then. It has been open sourced in order to allow the greater ski and snowboard bulding community to carry it forward.

It is free to use for personal and commercial purposes, licensed under the quite permissive Apache 2.0 license.

snoCAD-X is published on GitHub at https://github.com/mikemag/snoCAD-X

Binary releases for all platforms are at https://github.com/mikemag/snoCAD-X/releases

This is great! Glad you and Dan collaborated. This software is responsible for many of us to be ski builders!

Hi Guys, A quick Question
Was looking to install Snocad on a Surface Borrowed from Work.
I checked out the instructions on Github.
The instructions say to click the link for your 0s. I Can't find this. It looks like dan's site may be down at the moment, are they on here? Sorry if its a silly Question.

Thanks in advance
David

Hi,

Right now we are not quite there with the up to date and open sourced SnoCAD release in GitHUB, its on Mikes to do list and he'll let us know when he has it ready for release.

Dan did have the older version of SnoCAD shard on a Google site and the instructions to load it on your pc here...... viewtopic.php?t=4315&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=75 , this should get you up and running but the rubber is really going to hit the road when we get SnoCAD and MonkeyCAM working together nicely.

cheers
Rich

Hi Richie,
Thanks for your reply and apologies for not getting back to you.
I grabbed the installer and have installed it. Works a treat on 8.1
Thanks again to all involved with this. Getting a working, licensed copy of CAD isn't really viable for most of us so this is a great little alternative! You don't get something for nothing all that often these days so it's pretty great when you do, and the thing you get is so excellent!

Cheers

Thats excellent! are you using it on the Surface successfully? Yeah I agree that some of the software tools are expensive and to be honest for my purposes most CAD is probably completely over the top too at least until I get more time to learn to use it proficiently.

Right now I'd rather put any spare cash into my CNC project hardware rather than expensive software until I really need it.

I'm also starting to learn more with using freebies like Sketchup and another I like the look of is Spark Mechanical, both good for drawing up solid objects with as well as 2D.

In the next while, probably once we have SnoCAD and MonkeyCAM talking, I'll run a workgroup online , to walk through how the suite installs and how the design process works and what the outputs are.

In the meantime if you are using SnoCAD then please feel free to put any enhancement or improvement ideas into the GitHUB so it can be considered for future releases.

Any questions sing out too!

cheers

Hi Richie, works great on the surface 3. My only issue is the pick points are pretty tiny at high res so they are really difficult to drag with the stylus. I could change red and it would sort this I think.

Very good ! I agree on the control points they are tiny and hard to grab even on a bigger screen too. So set up a GitHUB account and put that in as a SnoCAD enhancement request!!!!!

Dan Graf has just tweaked the control point size so its double the current size from 5px to 10px, hopefully this helps. I expect this will pull through in the next compile of the snoCAD-X software and subsequent release. Mike will post info when he's released it I'm sure!

I just put up a new release at https://github.com/mikemag/snoCAD-X/rel ... g/v1.0.7.b

This includes Dan's control point changes plus a new core nose/tail shape from Mathieu Bilodeau. Thank you both for the updates!!

All releases will be held on github now, and they're never removed. No more wondering exactly where to get bits from, or whether or not you have something old.

Hey Mike thats great to see the first open source release of snoCAD-X , thanks for all your hard work pulling this first release together, and thanks to Dan and Matthew too for their input into this, and further again thanks to Dan for sharing his package with the community.

The control points are definitely easier now to see and the pointy spacer will be another good option for us.

cheers
