alternative topsheet methods

Post by mrobyrne »

hi
i am about to make my first board and i am wondering if it is possible to not include a top sheet, instead i would press it without out one and after the epoxy cures, but before i remove the flashing, i would make a top sheet of epoxy by pouring it thinly over the top of the board. is this recommended. the look i am trying to go for is similar to arbor snowboards ( shiny, clear allowing underlying wood grain to be seen)

You are going to see the glass and the wood core will be muted. Arbor uses a veneer I believe in most instances. So you are seeing a top sheet not the core.
I used a really thin piece of cloth and it appears hard and good enough without the added expense of top sheet.

UV can break down epoxy. Use a spar varnish on top to block the UV.
Idris posted a minimalist touring ski that did not seem to have a topsheet on it. He posted it on this site and on TGR.
