pre-bent edges ?

Post by ben_mtl »

I was wondering how do the industry bend their edges. Do they do it in-house (if yes, how ?) or is there a supplier somewhere who bends and cut the edges to a desired shape prior to delivery ?
I found it's the step in building which was pretty hard to replicate. Even if bending with a special tool is easy, bending and match the base shape is another story... especially as you have to do it 4 times for a pair of skis ;).

cdw edge will prebend edges, but you probably have to order a minimum and the lead times are huge.

They have mold that if you curve the edge on it, it springs back to the correct shape of the ski... obviously it is not the same shape as the ski (a little bit as if you want to bend a sheet of metal at 90 deg, you need to bend it to 95 deg and it then spring back to 90 deg) and the shape is not easy to figure out, but once you got it bending edges is easy!
