I was at the lumber store yesterday looking for something more substantial than the SPF I've been using for cores.
After digging around for a while (and making quite a mess) i stumbled upon a 1x8 rough piece of birch, about 7ft long. nice straight grain no knots.
$20 seemed pretty good. (less than 1/2 what they wanted for 1x6 finished maple the same length)
Should be more than enough for stringers and side wall for two pair.
When ripping it into strips and running it through the planer it smelled just like maple which got me thinking " I wonder what the difference is between birch and maple?"
I remember seeing a big E-modulus chart here somewhere but after searching couldn't find it.
so heres the one i did find after a bit of searching

Has anybody here used birch in there cores?
I put three 10mm stringers between my regular 19mm pine strips when gluing up my new core last night.
Once its dry I'll cut it to shape and put 10mm sidewalls on them.
I'm betting they end up pretty stiff.
