Large Diameter (20") Layflat Silicone Hose

Post by chrismp »

I am corresponding with a supplier for reinforced layflat silicone hoses and their technicians are currently checking whether they are able to produce large diameter (20" equals approx. 30" layflat) silicone hoses.

I am planning on using this type of hose in my press without a topmold and cat track as this size of hose can easily fit the full width of my press (50cm or 20") and still have a height of about 15cm or 6".

As the hoses are made of silicone they can easily withstand the high temperatures in a heated press without any further insulating layers. Plus, you gain the possibility to press 3d shapes (think DPS spoon or other concave/convex shapes).

The hoses would be rated up to 5 bar (70psi).

Let me know if you're interested in this and I'll keep you updated.

I'd be interested in giving it a shot too. We always like to try different things.

Just remembered something. My first hose was silicone. Rated to 80 psi.
It did not like being pinched at the ends. It blew at 50 psi on its 2nd or 3rd inflation. Just a though!

Actually....it blew at the valve. Split like 8 inches or so.

Sure it was not pvc or the likes? I've never seen silicone hose before and it was pretty hard to find this supplier...

my hose is 16" dia, "ANGUS SUPER AQUADUCT"

Its made for running temporary water mains over ground.

Thing is bomber, we've pressed it into nuts, bolts, sharp steel corners, it's got its share of nicks etc but it's taken a lot of abuse, and apparently can handle well over 100psi.

Previous owner used it for making capped boards, it doesnt seem like the thick skin would comform to cap over but ive seen the results first hand.

Kidde fire company is the supplier i believe, i might go for more as a backup

this is not the best place but it directly related

what's a benefit of using wide hose?I don't see. except for cap construction imo it makes no difference. Without cattracks how can heat blankets be used on the top?
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

How flexible are these hoses? Possible to cut the hose lengthwise and use it as a membrane for a vacuum table? Very interesting...

@Knights: I don't think they make that angus hose in 16" any longer...could only find 12" and thats easy to find way cheaper.

@MR: I think the heat blankets I have could take the beating. I don't want to do cap anyway...I just want to skip having to make top molds and maybe try some 3d shapes. I'd do this with a thin sheet of mdf board an top of the heat blanket and maybe even add some thin and flexible steel below it.

@All: Just to clearify, the hose manufacturer does make layflat silicone hoses and they're currently checking whether they're able to build hoses that large. I would probably rather go for 16-18" diameter in the end though.

A 4inch hose in terms of firefighting means inside diameter when pressurized. Laying flat it is almost 6.25" edge to edge. So the 12 inch hose should be just over 16" laying flat.
