wood core thickness

Post by sir.orange »

i m going to build a pair of telemark skis with following dimensions: overall length 177cm, 126 - 95 - 114 mm

the wood core will be made out of ash, i did some 1:1 mock ups out of other woods with cnc machining but now i m thinking if the core, at a length of 26cm under the bindings area with 11mm is too thick!??
towards tip and tail the thickness of 11mm gets tapered till 2mm.
the core itself will be layed up out of two sheets horizontally laminated pieces.

There isn't really an easy answer to this, you just need to build them and find out.

The length of the constant thickness area under the foot isn't all that matters, also how your thickness is tapered towards the 2mm tips.

Is it a linear taper? Does it stay thick for a long time, then get thin more quickly towards the ends, does it get thin really quick then stay relatively thin the rest of the way? The thicker it is (and the more of it is thick) the stiffer it will be.
