I went down to the scrap yard and found some ibeams...
They are 7" by 14" and 20' long at 38lbs/ft. They are only $190 bucks a piece so a pretty good deal from what I can tell... I'm not sure but to me they seem a little tall...
I used 2ea of 14'' and 1ea 12". BTW 7 inches wide you are going to need 3 beams

I think I'm going to start out doing one ski at a time... hopefully I'll have some heat in the press so it won't be that big of a deal. Do you suggest doing two at a time to start?

Also, I coundn't find my beam specs in that chart... they are W 7 X 38lb/ft
with a 14in height.. Should I find whatever is closest to that? Otherwise how do I determine the moment of inertia etc.?

awesome, thanks a ton for looking that up...
Is this enough information for someone to run some clacs on the deflection??

Deflection calc

Post by Anvil »

Assumptions:
clear span=7'=84"
pressure (60psi over 6")=360lbs per in
E(steel)=29000000 psi
Ix (W14X38)=385 in^4

Deflection=5(w)(l)^4/(384*e*I)

5(360)(84)^4/(384*29000000*385)=0.021" at center of span

Nice! so .021" of deflection sounds pretty acceptable to me. Do people think that a 13.5" span is enough to do two skis in? It seems like they might be a little close but maybe OK...
Thanks for everyones help

My press is 40cm wide (16 inches). It will comfortably press two skis with a widest point being 150mm.
13.5 inches is 33.75cm
I have about a 5cm gap between the skis in the middle.
I think you could press two skis 150mm wide each in a 13.5 inch wide press, but going bigger might start to be a bit restrictive.
Depends on what type of skis you are thinking.
If you are wanting really fat skis like 160mm in the tip then two of them is 32cm wide leaving only 1.75cm to separate them and keep them right off the edge. That's a pretty tight fit I'd say.
I think most people have 15 inch or 16 inch wide presses.
Don't wait up, I'm off to kill Summer....

Yep - 16 inch width.

If you're adding vertical supports, then leaving a small gap shouldn't be a problem. Say 1 1/2 inches to give you 15 inches.

You can span the gap with the mold and the threaded bar per HM setup, will hold it together.

Alternatively, you can concentrate on the size of the cassette and focus on a means of ensuring it remains in place when loaded.

Appreciate you didn't ask for the advice, but it's all just one big puzzle.

I just purchased the beams described above. I'm thinking that an 8' span for the beams is the way to go to make enough space for the molds and have some space to work..

Could someone run that calculation one more time with a 8' span instead of a 7'... I'm trying to determine if I can get away with not adding any center supports. Thanks a lot for everyones advice on here. So pumped I finally got the steel for this thing
