Out of curiosity I put the MOFOs on the scale, they felt pretty light for being so fat. This was the heaviest of the two by 14g.

These are definitely fatties something like 126-132-140-128-110 and 186cm

Image

The Portlys came in a bit heavier. This one was lighter than its mate by 16g.

Image

I think that the weight differences aren't too bad, and they'll get a bit lighter if I ever find the time to bevel my sidewalls.

It's been a while since I've posted anything here.
Not much to post...
Between work, building a new shop, and life in general, I haven't had much time for building.

Did get one pair built this year. The boy has outgrown the pair he's been skiing on for the last couple years. Mounted them up today.

Image

I'll spare the build details, but will say...
They are 130cm 125-95-115
core= aspen and 1 maple stringer and maple sidewalls. 1.3-7.5-1.3
Used green dayglo base as tip spacer, had to sand and flame it.
19oz triax, socrep over tiedye.

Did the tiedye last summer when my daughter was prepping for her t-shirt stand at the local market.
Did one very similar for skis for me but never got around to building them.

Image

Next year should be a different story. I hope!

White acrylic paint on the back of the logo stopped the bleed thru, should have done the frog as well. It was an after thought and the ski with the frog was already pressed.
Will know for next time to paint them before I cut them out. You can see a bit of paint got on the front side.

Still learning I guess.
Need to build a pneumatic press soon as the vacuum, while it does work, just doesn't squeeze things together as much as I'd like.
Once spring rolls around I'll get the shop finished up and then we'll see...

In the meantime, we'll go try em out tomorrow and see how they go.

Nice skis Sam !
How's the skiing in Fernie ?
A bad day skiing is always better than a good one at work...

Skiing isn't bad but haven't really had any snow for a while.
A couple 5cm days in the last few weeks.
It's been a weird season, probably 10-15cms in my yard, normal would be 150cm or so.
Hopefully it happens soon or water will be a problem next summer!

We usually get around 10+m of snow over the course of the winter.
So far we've gotten around 480cms, but most of that came in nov, early dec.
Have probably only gotten 30cms since before xmas.
Went for a few laps today skiing's not bad but lots of "early season hazards" due to low snow pack.

Oh well heading to Vegas for a few days on Sunday, hopefully there will be new snow when I get back.

Been just over 2 years since my last post here.
Wow time flies!!!

I finally got around to building a new pair of skis.
These are a revision of the Portlys shown above.
I'm donating these to the silent auction at our local ski clubs comp banquet in early march.
We are trying to raise enough money to buy an air bag for next winter.

The square tip and tails, while they looked cool, had too much drag.
They weren't bad if you were just skiing pow
but when you went from groomed/hardpacked into the pow you had to be prepared for it or they would send you over the handle bars. (if skis had handle bars that is)

Just pulled these out this morning!

Note the rounded tips, tails are pretty similar.

This was a pretty long process.
I replaced the vacuum membrane on my press as the old one was getting pretty beat up.
Thought I'd better test it out, it just got to full vacuum when the press table broke again.
This had happened before, I had propped up the tip and tails of my mold to get a bit of early rise.
The vacuum pulled the table into the void under the mold and broke.
Last time it just cracked the table and I managed to pour some watered down white glue into the crack and it was fixed.
This time it broke! But not in the same place.
I tried to seal it up, as my weekend was almost over, but after dicking around with it for 1/2 a day I realized I had to rebuild it.
Got a fresh piece of 3/4" MDF and fit it in there. Put a coat of varathane on it, wouldn't hold a vacuum.
Ended up having to do 3 coats before it would stop bleeding air. By then I was back to work and a week behind.

I have 2 more pair to build in the next week or so.
A pair of all mountain skis for the boy and a little pair of mogul skis for the silent auction.
The mogul skis I was planning on building for the boy a couple years ago but ran out of time.
Now he's long out grown them and the core and all the materials have been sitting in the basement since then.
Just have to slap a mold together and off we go.

Will post more once I've made some progress.
