Thickness Center

Post by flatlander »

Hey everyone,

I took a pair of calipers to 10+ pairs of skis for various rides, all alpine, I found that surprisingly the maximum thickness for most skis lies in the region of the crown of the foot region, about halfway between the MRS and waist. Its pretty evident if you look at how on most common bindings the heel piece will be mounted on the tapered section of the back.

For the Scratch I found a relatively const thickness UF and for the 1080 (03-04) its centered at the waist. But for alpine GS, all-mtn, even straight skis all seem to have their thickness distribution centered in the crown of area of the foot, which for straight is the MRS.

Anyone have any thoughts. Does this have something to do with flex profile or foot pressure distribution? I would have expected it to be under the arch at the waist.

Thanks,

Steve
