Sneak Peak: A couple of new skis

Post by kelvin »

I made a couple of new skis this weekend with the help of the CNC and a couple of friends. I used the CNC to cut the bases and profile the core. It is much more accurate than doing it by hand and the bases come out super smooth.

I didn't have time to make the core blanks, so I went to Home Depot and got a piece of 1"x12"x6' board of poplar. The wide boards at HD are not one piece of solid wood, but made out of 2" laminations. I ripped the board in half which gave me 2 cores. It worked pretty well and is a quick and easy way of getting core blanks. The poplar is pretty light, compared to maple or birch.

cnc cut the circles on the bases. It took a little sanding to get them to fit perfectly, but I'm pretty happy at the way they turned out.

Looks great. Glad to hear the CNC worked so well.

How long did it take you to profile each core?

Once setup, it took about 20 minutes to profile a core. I'm pretty sure I can shave off quite a bit of time by optimizing the cuts though.

Very nice, as usual. Very exciting times on the CNC, I'm sure.
