they've also been doing that with their snowboards since they started makin the bonfire line in 1995-1996, so i suppose they have had it in their skis that long too.
they say it makes for more pop in the nose and tail, it pre-fractures the glass a little during the second pressing but causes them to resist more when placed under load.
that's just what they say though, my guess is like you said its just a simpler initial layup
