Urgent questions

Post by *ARMADA* »

We plan on laying up a ski in the morning, and need quick answers to the follwing questions:
- Is the bottom of the base the smooth side or the textured side?
- How are you supposed to flame treat the sidewalls which are attached to the wood core?

the shiny/glossy side is the bottom (contacts with the snow).

the smooth (shiny) side is the side that contacts the snow. the treated side (textured) is the side that faces towards the core.

for the sidewalls you need to flame treat all sides that you want the epoxy to adhere to. so you would flame treat the side the contacts the wood core and the top and bottom surfaces that will contact the layers of fiberglass. basically three sides of the sidewall. i hope i didn't make things more confusing.

I know you have to flame treat the sidewalls, but how do you do that without damaging the core i.e. catching it on fire?

you don't flametreat that much. You torch the plastic about an inch per second, the wood will not catch fire.

you dont flame treat the CORE .. only the sidewall prior to attaching it to the core. When you flame treat the ptex .. try going about 1"/sec

ofcourse you don't flame the wood, but you have to flametreat the top and bottom of the sidewalls attached to the core (if you glue the sidewalls to the core before you profile it, like most of us do). This is the most important place to flametreat on your ski.

hmm, well let me know how the snowboard inserts work out, in the meantime im gonna check the thread on the ski bindings, or atleast the diameter, i dont necessarily need to use the screws that come with the bindings.
