Masonite Cracking in Tip and Tail

Post by Grizzly Adams »

I've been using 1/8" Masonite on top of my molds (that've been designed with 3/4" ribs and consequently 3/4" gaps) and its stiff enough to eliminate any significant waviness or concavity in the base, but it always cracks on me when I try and bend it in the tip and tail sections. In the past, I've screwed it into place and did my best to ignore the cracking sections because the hose eventually presses it into a smooth shape against the tip and tail inserts, but I'd really like to find a material that is stiff enough to bridge my 3/4" gaps but still flexible enough to conform to my tip and tail contours.

Right now, I'm thinking a couple layers of thin aluminum or steel might be the best solution, but it seems like nobody else has had these issues with the masonite cracking. Any other material suggestions?
Its a good thing cold smoke doesn't give you cancer.
