Thanks for the great pics falls, especially youre planer rig.
I'm glad I did a few more hours of reading before I wasted time with a router set-up when I have a 15" planer.
Ski vid was awesome too....don't get me wrong...just working up to my first build and focusing there.
I plan on using bamoo too and thought I saw some tear-out from planing...was that on the leading edge into the planer? What did you do to sort that out?
I read that you dont treat the core/sidewalls. how do you find the abuse?
It's OK! I'm an abuser too. just wondering about the exposed end grain in the tail section.

thanks JT
I use ptex tip and tail spacers so there isn't exposed wood in tip and tail. Bamboo sidewalls seem to take abuse pretty well. Even untreated or just treated with linseed oil seems to be OK as long as you dry them out after use. Lately I have been using a polyurethane on the sidewalls for some added protection.
In planing the cores I leave them long by 15cm at each end so the tear-out/snipe is in these sections that I trim off with the router before layup. This seems to work pretty well.

Ha, found my journal almost dropping off the first page
Has been a while since I built anything.
Made another pair of carving skis last night with a different core profile to the original.
Did some very basic veneer jointing because I didn't have two pieces of bamboo veneer long enough and wide enough to cover a ski.

I like the simple look of the darker bamboo strip to join the veneers, good use of materials.

Hey Falls! First, nice work! Can you give us some core dimensions for your bamboo cores and the resulting stiffness? I am building my first pair with bamboo and know that its a strong/stiff material, but just not sure which side I want to err on: too stiff or too soft.

This pair are a carver. 126 - 75 - 105 dimensions (tip, waist, tail) 177cm length.
Core was vert lam carbonised bamboo about 15cm tip spacer and 5cm tail spacer.
I measured the core every 10cm for this pair.
tail 2.2mm
10cm from tail 3.68
20cm from tail 5.55
30 7.4
40 8.73
50 9.64
60 11.21
70 12.08
80 12.15
boot centre 78cm from tip
90 11.48
100 10.4
110 9.77
120 9.01
130 7.75
140 5.67
150 4.46
tip 2.04
I would say this set with 22oz triax are bordering towards stiff in the medium stiff flex group
