Is this a good idea, or is it a cheap substitute

Would this "hobby" kevlar provide the strength of fiberglass or does it look too thin and/or cheap?

I don't think it would be too useful, there is only enough to put one layer on each side of the skis and it is very expensive, even with the higher strength of the kevlar you will need at least 3 layers on each side of the ski and then you need to put some diagonal fabric in to give the ski some torsional strength so it would cost 165 + the diagonal fabric. If you really want to use kevlar you could try a kevlar sock that would give you a torsion box of kevlar sollerpaddles.comsells a whole variety of different fabrics including ones that are thick enough to use in one layer.

Tri-axial Fiberglass in the correct thickness costs less than 35.00 for an entire pair of skis
