GS Race Ski

Post by pmg »

Lets see if it performs as it should!

185cm long, 20,5m radius, full camber, hollow tip, 1500g per ski, 70mm underfoot. 450g/m² carbon triax + 120g/m² flax uni to dampen. lets hope it damps as well as everyone says.

Self-routed ski ends made from ABS.

Beautiful veneer! What type of would is that? Is that a spar urethane finish?

To be honest, I have no idea what wood it is :) A friend of mine used to build skis as well when we started 4 years ago but he soon stopped. Now I use the leftovers, e.g. this veneer.

The finish is a normal PU finish, normally used or boats.

It doesn't have to perform!
Looks so nice that even if it performed like a dog.. it's a winner!

Very nice ones! I hope to hear they perform as good as they look. Have fun testing!

And they perform! Made the Level 3 skiing instructor race in time on these skis yesterday. 3 times before I always failed on bought race skis (ok, this year I trained, but they really ride superior to my Völkl race skis).

Well done. Did you race in those touring boots?

Yes, I raced in my touring boots :) Don't ask how many times I discussed about that already :)

PMG very nice! I also have a GS ski in the works for next season with a similar layup using flax/CF. Did you use CF in the full width or just a strip? What did you use for a wood core? I plan on using ash, IPE sidewall. Making a damp ski is important for racing and is probably the holy grail of ski building. I'm racing on Atomic Redsters 184cm (which I happen to love). So I'm setting my expectations fairly high :D

I started thinking about a separate damping system like the D2 or a UVO type setup, but if the ski is already damp, then it's unnecessary.

Interesting you went with a hollow style tip. No chatter issues?

Congrats on the race!

Hi,

I used the carbon full width, the flax as well. As wood I used ash.
Regarding dampness: When I test the dampening in my workshop and compare it to my Völkl GS race ski with 2x titanal, the völkl is waaay damper and stops swinging earlier. On Snow however, I didn't feel a difference but prefer mine because it has a better edge grip and a bit less radius (21m instead of more than 23 on the Völkl).

I just llike doind hollow tip, its kind of my style. What do you mean with chatter?

By chatter I mean, during a hard turn does the downhill ski hop or skip across the ice or hard pack instead of holding grip.

Not at all. And I don't understand why a hollow tip would lead to this... The contact point of the camber is way behind the hollow tip, about 5cm.
