Does anyone have any experiance using resin instead of epoxy during layup?
I work PT at a major composite yacht manufacturing company, and often get both polyester and vinylester resin for free. I've used both types to layup composite canoes with great success.
I know that resin does not flex as well as epoxy. Also, one form of the resin (IIRC, polyester-I'll check next week when I'm there) absorbs water.
My theory is that I can use the free resin for the first few skis to get the method down, then switch to epoxy for durability. Of course, if the skis are going to delam on the first run, then this isn;t worht it. Any thoughts?

I have been working for a long time at a major ski manufacturer company as R&D manager and I can tell you that epoxy resin works well, is the best compared to many tests with polyester and other types of resins.
So, if you want to make your first skis, use epoxy.
