wooden press need help

Post by setto »

Hi,

i hope somebody can help me. I need somebody to calculate for me.

I want to build my press out of wood, but i am afraid my press will explode.

The top dimensions of the press are: 2m length, 48cm wide, 11cm heigh. The wood has a bending strength of 68 N/mm².

Is that enough for pressing Skis?

that's not really enough information, do you have a drawing of the construction?

I have a wooden press, it is cheaper and lighter than my metal press. Two strong guys can actually move this in two pieces. the beams are: l240 w48 h30 (cm) the beams are made ski construction style with a core and everything. Imagine many wooden I-beams side by side.

like this:

hi,

no I haven't got any pictures, but my Press will look like Buuks woodpress. Instead of the Threated rods i want to use 11cm wide and 4cm thick wood.

The Pressframe will have many wooden i-beams, 10 i-beams.

I try to paint a picture and will post it next days, if this is not enough

Using microlams...

Post by NEngineer »

This is what my press is going to look like.
All the wood colored beams are microlams. And metal is steel tubing (2"*2").
Supposedly, microlams are stronger than wooden I-Beams/joists.

The press is 8' * 15.5".
I'm in the process of making the cat-track and mould.

5 hours? What program are you using? Sketchup would do that in about 30mins maybe, not used that too much, not more then a qwarter in Rhino

Yes it was Sketchup, but I have to learn it first. 3 or 4 times its shut down by itself without saving.

Hi Setto,

I think the wooden beams will be able to hold a very high pressures. But I am concerned about the connection point of the threaded rod to the wooden beams. I am not sure if the wood will be able to resist the high stresses that oocur there. Also wood is a very unpredictable (non homogeneous), so if you want to be sure I recommend using steel instead of wooden beams on the sides. I know this is more expensive, but you have to take care of your own safety as well.

To conclude I think 2000 mm length might be too short. I think your press should have a minimum length of: the max. ski length + 300 to 400 mm.

thank you for your response,

the problem is, i will get all the wood for less and their maximum lengh are 2m.
I think i will have to try. I will get presure to the hose an run out of the house for half an hour. Is it possible to calculate how much bar/psi i am able to press?
