wooden press need help
Hi,
i hope somebody can help me. I need somebody to calculate for me.
I want to build my press out of wood, but i am afraid my press will explode.
The top dimensions of the press are: 2m length, 48cm wide, 11cm heigh. The wood has a bending strength of 68 N/mm².
Is that enough for pressing Skis?

that's not really enough information, do you have a drawing of the construction?
I have a wooden press, it is cheaper and lighter than my metal press. Two strong guys can actually move this in two pieces. the beams are: l240 w48 h30 (cm) the beams are made ski construction style with a core and everything. Imagine many wooden I-beams side by side.

Hi Setto,
I think the wooden beams will be able to hold a very high pressures. But I am concerned about the connection point of the threaded rod to the wooden beams. I am not sure if the wood will be able to resist the high stresses that oocur there. Also wood is a very unpredictable (non homogeneous), so if you want to be sure I recommend using steel instead of wooden beams on the sides. I know this is more expensive, but you have to take care of your own safety as well.
To conclude I think 2000 mm length might be too short. I think your press should have a minimum length of: the max. ski length + 300 to 400 mm.
Buuk

Make things as simple as possible, but not too simple
